Looking for a extra special winter holiday? Then keep on reading! Today I’m taking a closer look at probably one of Finland’s most incredible hotels: the Kakslauttanen Igloo Hotel! It sounds like pretty much every childhood dream come true. And the best thing about it is that you won’t be giving up on any luxuries!
Sure, most of the time we do focus on warm destinations that come with plenty of sun (in contrast to the dreary weather back home). But now that winter’s slowly setting in again, there are so many unbelievable locations that are just downright magical at this time of year! The Alps attract budding adrenaline junkies looking to tear up the pistes at glamorous resorts. But in Scandinavia there are a whole host of beautiful, alluring destinations waiting for you. Whether it’s exploring the awe-inspiring, snow-decked fjords of Norway, chasing the Northern Lights in Iceland or browsing the Christmas markets in Stockholm, Scandinavian winters are always incredible. And at the Kakslauttanen igloo hotel, it’ll be nothing short of unforgettable.
If you want a winter holiday that’s relaxing, tranquil and above all super-duper snug, then perhaps this incredible hotel will do the trick. Kakslauttanen is a 4* resort in North Lapland which has quite rightly earned the nickname ‘Igloo Village’ that’s famous around the world. I’ll be taking a closer look at what exactly you can expect from a stay at this awesome location!
The Kakslauttanen Igloo Hotel: where winter magic comes alive!
Glass Igloos – See the Northern Lights from the comfort of your own bed!
There are a few natural phenomena that are so beautiful that you simply have to see them at least once in your life. This is definitely the case with the Northern Lights. They can be seen on several nights from the end of August to the end of April in Arctic regions – Scandinavia included. The architects of Kakslauttanen were aware that many tourists don’t want to miss out on this spectacle during their holiday here.
That’s why they built twenty glass igloos and a glass teepee. They’re designed in such a way to allow guests to cosy up their snug double bed and still be able to see the beautiful night skies above! Front row seats to the Northern Lights, shall we say! The glass dome’s clever construction means that there could be the heaviest snow storm raging outside but you’d still feel pleasantly warm in your little Unfortunately, due to high demand and limited numbers, it’s not possible to spend more than one night in a row in the glass igloo. But fret not – there are plenty of other places to spend the rest of your stay at the Kakslauttaten resort. You won’t want to miss out on these ones either!
Snow igloos – for true Finns!
Alongside the romantic glass domes, Kakslauttanen also has something for genuine adventure lovers up its sleeve. Want to spend a night in a real snow igloo? If this has always been one of your childhood dreams, then you should book your holiday to Finland sooner rather than later. With 60 beds (four per igloo), availability is scarce. It’s not a luxurious +20°C (it’s truly authentic in that respect), but nevertheless you’ll be properly equipped with a heavy-duty sleeping bag and clothes to keep you warm, including woolly hats and soaks. If you leave your hand-knitted scarf at home, then don’t worry! The hotel can always lend you one.
Log cabins – the perfect place to cosy up
In addition to the exciting night in the igloo, you can also top your holiday off with a few nights in the rustic, but no less luxurious log cabins, built in a typically Finnish style. You’ll have to do without an LED TV and a dish washer, but it comes equipped with a private sauna and a fireplace. That’s a fair deal, right? With its classic Scandinavian design, the hotel has really outdone itself here. This is the place to be if you want to experience winter at its best, and enjoy quality time with your nearest and dearest.
Luxury cabins – for those extra special occasions
Even if the accommodation and location are impeccable, some people still crave more. Something bigger, better, and much more luxurious. However, the Kakslauttanen Resorthas exactly the thing for them! Those looking to travel with their whole family, clique, or even an entire football team would be best booking the Sivakka, the biggest log cabin in the igloo village. Alongside a gigantic bedroom, you’ll find three bathrooms, a kitchen, a sauna and a fireplace for an evening story time with the family. If it’s just the two of you travelling but still want to enjoy the rustic design, then you’ll feel right at home in the Traditional House where you’ll find wonderful furnishing complete with a classic rocking chair. Couples can choose between the 60m² Queen Suite and the Wedding Chamber. Along with the already mentioned facilities, both come equipped with a bathtub big enough for two. The Queen Suite also spoils you with its own outdoor jacuzzi. Now wouldn’t that be something?
Sleigh ride with huskies and all – the activities at the igloo hotel
Of course you’ll always need a bit of action to keep you from being bored. Luckily the Kakslauttanen igloo hotel has got all sorts of amazing activities on offer. You can go for a traditional sleigh ride with reindeer, horses and huskies. You can even feed them yourself during the breaks, and for those interested the guides have plenty of interesting things to say about the animals themselves and the surrounding area. Those who fancy a bit of sport should make their way to the cross country ski track. You can borrow the appropriate equipment from reception. The highlight by far (albeit expensive) is the Inari ice fishing course which costs €240.
Gastronomy: Enjoy some typical Finnish cuisine
Besides a good night’s sleep, there’s no better way to recover from the cold than a delicious, hearty meal. The Kakslauttanen igloo hotelhas two restaurants, and you can either choose a typical Finnish meal from the á la carte menu or surprise yourself with a three course meal when you book half board. Naturally you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to breakfast too. Choose something from the sumptuous buffet before you start your truly unique day in this winter wonderland.
Arrival and surrounding areas
Although the hotel is somewhat isolated, you can still easily reach many attractions in the surrounding area. You can also get to the next ski region without any difficulties. Right in front of the igloo hotel you’ll find the ski bus stop. If you arrive by plane, which I highly recommend, then you can be collected by the transfer service at Ivalo airport. You’ve got to sign up for this in good time, but once it’s all sorted it’ll be just a 30-minute journey to the hotel.
So what are you waiting for?
If you’re planning a special family holiday, a trip with your best friends or a romantic weekend away during the Christmas break, then you should give the igloo hotel in the Kakslauttanen Resort a second look. With crazy activities and extraordinary accommodation, a stay here would be absolutely exceptional! If you’re lucky the Northern Lights might even honour you with their presence. Believe me – there’s not many better places to watch them from than in your very own glass igloo.
