The many faces of the Côte d’Azur

If you want to explore the most beautiful places along the Côte d’Azur and don’t want to miss any highlights, it’s definitely best to hire a rental car and start a small road trip. This gorgeous holiday region has so much more to offer than azure blue sea and luxury hotels. The French Riviera stretches from Cassis, a small town east of Marseille, to Menton on the Italian border. With a few short stopovers, it’s easy to explore the 250-kilometre-long stretch with a car. One thing’s for sure – the breath-taking views will leave you speechless.

“The breath-taking views will leave you speechless.”

You should plan your dream route beforehand and mark the highlights you definitely don’t want to miss on the map. If you have time, leave a few days free of travelling so that you can get to know all the different sides of the Côte d’Azur. Towns like St. Tropez and Nice invite you to go sightseeing, hidden bays are ideal for whiling away the hours and the mountainous hinterland is a paradise for hikers. This landscape has inspired so many famous artists including Renoir and Picasso and that’s got to count for something.

Saint-Tropez, Nice and more – pure glamour

St. Tropez

As soon as you starting talking about the Côte d’Azur, many people first think of Saint-Tropez. That’s not surprising either. Today, the former fishing village is one of the most popular towns in the whole of the French Riviera, especially amongst the rich and famous. Splendid yachts, sleek sports cars and expensive luxury hotels are not rare here and brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada and Chanel attract celebrities like Naomi Campbell and Beyonce. The ‘Pearl of the French Riviera’ is a well-deserved nickname.

Cannes and Antibes

If a stay in glamorous St. Tropez isn’t enough, you should definitely follow the coast north. A famous film festival takes place in Cannes every year and Antibes is a very popular holiday town with an enchanting old town. You should stop off in these two pretty towns if at all possible. You won’t regret it!

Nice

We’re now heading off to the charming port town of Nice, which is no less beautiful or glamorous than St. Tropez. Situated right in the middle of the French Riviera, you can stroll along the wonderful Promenade des Anglais. You can admire the luxurious yachts moored in the harbour and look out at the wide sea. Wander through the markets in the old town, browse through the many stylish boutiques and enjoy yourself on the beach or in one of the many chic cafes. There are so many places where you can relax.

Villefranche-sur-Mer

If you want you can also pay a visit to the charming neighbouring town of Villefranche-sur-Mer. It is a small, romantic town between Nice and Monaco, which has become a popular haven for lots of celebrities because of its quiet location.

Monaco

Monaco, the next jewel on our list, is only a 30-minute drive from Nice. Sky-blue water, shining white villas and breathtaking scenery are typical of this small country. It is well-known for its casinos, like the famous Casino of Monte Carlo, expensive sports cars and its luxury houses. If you love glitz and glamour, you’ll have the best time here. The assumption that the French Riviera is just bursting with luxury isn’t entirely wrong!

Pampelonne Beach – sun, sea and celebrities!

There are plenty of wonderful beaches along the Côte d’Azur which are ideal for relaxing and bathing. But, there’s one beach, which stands out above all the rest – the famous Pampelonne Beach or Plage de Pampelonne in St. Tropez. It’s a celebrity hotspot with world-famous stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney and Selena Gomez coming here to have fun in the sun and cool off in the sparkling blue Mediterranean Sea. When they’ve had enough of relaxing on the beach or hiding from the paparazzi on their luxury yachts, they enjoy a few glasses of ice-cold champagne in the fashionable clubs on the beach. Club 55, Nikki Beach and La Voile Rouge are particularly popular with the stars.

Except for keeping your eyes open and looking out for celebrities, you can obviously spend a typical day at the beach here. You can go swimming in the azure sea, try out kite surfing or skim across the waves on a jet ski. You’re not just here for people watching. ;) I’d recommend a visit outside peak season to avoid the mass of tourists and so you can spread out on the beach.

Hire a rental car and start your journey and let this beautiful corner of the Earth amaze you. Explore its unique landscapes with their picture-perfect beaches and idyllic hinterland, enjoy an unforgettable sunset from one of the many charming harbours and just relax.
