The breathtaking landscapes of our Emerald Isle means that we’ve plenty of options when it comes to a truly relaxing, romantic getaway where you can leave all the stress at home. For those of you looking to spark a bit of romance, I’ve been looking up and down the country in search of the Ireland’s most romantic hotels.
When planning a romantic getaway that will really knock your socks off, there’s plenty of things to consider. First off there’s the settings – beautiful, awe-inspiring landscapes are a must, and you’ll most certainly be looking for a tranquil atmosphere. Then there’s the hotel itself. Is it beautifully designed? Are the rooms plush? Are there amazing views and fancy spa facilities on hand?
Over the several years I’ve spent Holidayguru-ing, I’ve definitely realised one thing – when it comes to luxury hotels, Ireland definitely knows what the score is! Many top Irish establishments have made their way into top-notch travel publications such as Condé Nast, so it just goes to show that you don’t have to travel far to really indulge in a bit of VIP treatment.
Romantic hotels are scattered all over the country, but of course, there are extra romantic places in Ireland like Kerry and West Cork, where the beauty of nature gives your romantic getaway that special something… For some, a spa is a must for a couple’s break, which I can understand as a lazy afternoon in the spa area lets you unwind and relax from a hectic routine. However, I have also made sure that these hotels have amazing restaurants on-site so that you can end your day in some lovely atmosphere with a great bottle of wine, a fantastic meal and great service. Take a look at my top 10 pick of the most romantic hotels in Ireland and spark up a bit of proper romance. Love is in the air!
One of my favourite hotels in the Galway area, this lovely 4* hotel comes with everything you could need for a brilliant stay. Classy interiors, excellent spa facilities and a wonderful rooftop terrace where you can enjoy some lovely cocktails just the two of you. Of course, if you’re aren’t too busy spoiling yourselves rotten in the aforementioned spa, you’re perfect situated for heading out on a romantic trips along the Wild Atlantic Way, where you can experience some of Ireland’s prettiest views.
If coastal escapes are more your thing, then you’ll adore The Maritime Hotel down in Bantry. Another one of my firm favourites, this 4* hotel enjoys a privileged location overlooking Bantry Bay, where you can imagine just how beautiful the sunsets are here! From the sleek design to the breathtaking pool, there’s plenty to love about this hotel. The suites have a fantastic air of class about them. To make your stay extra special there are various packages you can book, such as a superb table d’hôte dining experience and even plush treatment packages at the You Time spa.
Sometimes you just want to treated like royalty and indulge in a little bit of that VIP lifestyle. If that’s what you’re after, then you’ll be in good hands at the beautiful Mt. Juliet Estate. Set in the grounds of a breathtaking Georgian country house, this 5* establishment offers a refined, tranquil atmosphere where you’re free to switch off from the outside world and enjoy your time together. On-site you’ll find several outstanding restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Lady Helen Restaurant, and you can even sit down for a proper afternoon tea in one of the stately lounges. On top of all that you’ve loads of fantastic activities on hand, including fishing, golfing, archery and falconry to name but a few!
Druids Glen Hotel & Golf Resort, Newtownmountkennedy, Co. Wicklow
Set in the heart of Wicklow’s beautiful hills, the 5* Druids Glen Resort is a heavenly retreat in the countryside that’s worlds apart from the bustling streets of Dublin, which is only half an hour away. The fact that it’s an award-winning wedding location speaks volumes about this place as well! Ease all of your aches and pains in the intimate spa, relax in the jacuzzi or sauna, or even go for a refreshing swim in the beautiful 18-metre pool which features floor-to-ceiling windows. You’ll also find two championship golf courses, both of which are beautifully landscaped. A true little oasis in the east of Ireland.
If you want a romantic getaway that’s fit for a king and queen, then you couldn’t go wrong with this place. Just seeing the view of castle reflected in the water with the breathtaking hills behind it… It’s like something out of a fairy tale! Inside you can expect the usual stately touches such grand wood panelling, open fires and beautiful stucco ceilings. But what really draws me to the place is are the unspoiled views of the river that you’ll be able to enjoy as you sit down to dine in the excellent restaurant. The dictionary definition of a romantic time if you ask me!
This one is definitely on my bucket list! I love the modern design and calm mood of the Europe Hotel & Resort. The 5* hotel surely belongs to one of the most romantic hotels in Ireland and rightly so! Their ESPA Spa has you in for a full luxury pampering and was awarded last year with a “Gold Medal”. On-site you can play a couple of rounds of golf, go horse-riding, hiking or get a boat out into the water and enjoy the calmness of the lakes. My idea of heaven!
Another beautiful castle for those of you wanting to live like royalty! Situated just outside the centre of Dublin, it just goes to show that you’ll still be able to find your own little oasis of peace in the Fair City. This hotel masterfully combines the original ornamentation of the building with a distinct modern edge, which in my eyes really gives it that wow factor. With several restaurants on-site, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to treating yourselves to an unforgettable dining experience.
The coastal views at this very plush country house hotel have to be seen to be believed! I’ve always been in love with the gorgeous coastlines of Mayo, but when you get to enjoy a proper dinner with a view like this I think it’s fair to say that this will be a getaway to remember. All of the dishes at the La Fougere restaurant are locally sourced, and should be craving a little bit of a pamper sesh, you’re in the right place – the Salveo spa features a whopping 12 treatment rooms, a thermal suites and a very stately pool.
Looking out onto the beautiful mountain peaks of Killarney, the lovely 5* Dunloe Hotel has everything you could need for a relaxing getaway enjoying some of the most beautiful landscapes going. Their extensive gardens even feature the ruins of a 12th Century Castle! After spending the day exploring Killarney National Park or the beaches of Inch Strand and Rossbeigh, you can unwind in the spa or sit down for a beautiful meal in the Oak Restaurant.
One last hotel that brings us to Kerry (sure it is gorgeous!) is the 4* Parknasilla Resort & Spa. Also set along the Wild Atlantic Way in Sneem, this hotel boasts with special arrangements that you can book to spend the perfect romantic weekend. The resort dates back to the late 17th century and definitely hasn’t lost its charm. Fully equipped with a spa and a golf course you will find a way to spend your time. I mean you’re set just next to the Kerry Mountains. Go for a hike :)
