I know what you’re thinking – a hotel from salt? Does such a thing actually exist? Well, prepared to be amazed, as I’m about to show you this unbelievable hotel, the Palacio de Sal! Located in the gorgeous country of Bolivia, the majority of the hotel is made up of millions of blocks of salt, creating a hotel that truly is unique. Take a look for yourselves!
Palace de Sal – the first ever salt hotel in the world!
After the ancient lake of Tauca dried up over 10,000 years ago it created an enormous crust of salt, resulting in the salt flats of Salar de Uyuni. Around 10 billion tonnes of salt has accumulated in an area of 12,000km²! Obviously these considerable amounts of salt can’t be completely quarried and dug out, so in the early 90s the Bolivians came up with the genius idea of creating a hotel made from millions of salt blocks – the first ever hotel anywhere in the world to be built out of salt! However it was demolished in 2002 following a few hiccups with the construction. People didn’t have to wait long for a replacement though: in 2007 the Palacio de Sal opened its doors to guests in its new location on the eastern edge of Salar de Uyuni.
Palacio de Sal: The surreal landscapes of Salar de Uyani, one of the flattest places in the world.
Palacio de Sal: Thanks to the hotel’s remote location you’ll be guaranteed to get unbelievably clear night skies!
Just so we can clear a few things up: the walls, ceilings – almost everything – are all made of salt! Even the fittings, i.e. the beds, tables and chairs, are largely made out of salt too and prepared with mattresses and blankets. As well as 30 igloo-shaped double rooms, there’s also a spacious dining hall.
Palacio de Sal: The impressive foyer is the focal point of the hotel – just because it’s made of salt doesn’t mean it can’t look good!
Palacio de Sal: The snug dining room offers fantastic views across the salt flats and has local specialities on offer such as llama.
Palacio de Sal: The rooms all feature igloo-like ceilings made from roughly hewn salt blocks – a great touch!
Palacio de Sal: The twin rooms are also super snug. You can see how the bed frames really are made of salt too!
Palacio de Sal: The communal area also features the chunky furniture made out of salt. It’s certainly impressive!
