New Year’s Eve in Berlin – fireworks as far as the eyes can see
Let’s be honest: it’s not Berlin if there’s not a whole host of parties celebrating the New Year in several places at the same time. Really, the ‘oooh’s and ‘aaah’s are bound to sound out come midnight and breathtaking fireworks shoot out into the sky all over the place. Whether you want to admire the New Year’s fireworks on Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer Platz or on the river Spree – I guarantee you’ll never have seen such an incredible play of colour in the sky before. The mass of onlookers tend to gather at the Brandenburg Gate of course – the celebration there is regarded as the largest New Year’s Eve open-air event in the world. It’s not a place for those suffering from claustrophobia as 1 million guests are expected to come to Berlin to welcome the New Year this December.
Paint the town red at the Brandenburg Gate
What awaits you at the Brandenburg Gate on the 31st December is a colourful mixture of live bands and DJs who will blast the music at full volume all the way to the Victory Column 2km away and they’ll party with you until the small hours of the morning. New Year’s Eve officially begins at 7pm, kicked off with gigs from various artists. Every year, the artists performing on the evening are announced at the beginning of December. I can reveal who gave it their absolute best last year: Jimmy Sommerville, Juli, Laith Al-Deen, David Hasselhoff and Marques rocked the stage among others. If you’re at the right place at the right time, you can have your five minutes in the spotlight – the party is broadcast live on German television!
Depending on when you start your New Year’s trip, I have some great Berlin tips to help you explore the city on your own. This way, you’ll be able to cosy up in bed on the 1st January without having to regret the fact that you didn’t explore the city more closely. No only will you be able to discover some great sights, you’ll also have the chance to listen in to the musicians at rehearsals! The location of the party is opened from Wednesday at 12pm! You can enjoy an unforgettable view of parts of Berlin from the river Spree – depending on which route your ship will take. There are namely various different offers out there. As you step down from the ship at 1am, you can decide whether you want to call it a night there or tour through Berlin’s hottest clubs.
Of course, an exclusive restaurant ship is not the only option for welcoming the New Year on the Spree. The city namely offers its own New Year’s Party Cruise and several boats participate in it. Highlights such as the East-Side-Gallery, Nikolaiviertel and the Berlin Cathedral are called at on the way from Treptow – and you can fill your tummies at the buffet during the cruise too!
