Bohemian lifestyles, fantastic weather and some of the coolest vibes around, California really does have it all! So why not get inspired by my hand-picked selection of some of the coolest Airbnbs in California. Caution: wanderlust guaranteed!
California Dreaming by The Mamas & The Papas, California Soul by Marlena Shaw… Two absolute classics in my opinion, and nothing sums up how I feel about California better than these two tracks. Listening to them brings up so much imagery in my head – driving along palm-lined boulevards in downtown LA, cruising the desert roads and marvelling at the views of the Pacific and enjoying the timeless, laid-back vibes that sets this state apart from its neighbours. OK – so I’ve a really bad case of itchy feet (no doubt thanks to the cheap flights to LA from Shannon) but to satisfy my wanderlust I’ve been on the hunt for some of the coolest Airbnbs in California!
The Santa Monica Mountains are a part of everyday life in Los Angeles. Extending naturally outwards from the Hollywood Hills that many a millionaire and celebrity call home, it offers locals and visitors alike a chance to escape the hustle and bustle in downtown LA and the sprawling suburbs. The wild landscapes are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, and from the many vantage points you’ll have panoramic views of LA and the Pacific Ocean stretching out to the horizon.
If you’re craving to take a step back from everything and do things at your own pace in gorgeous surroundings, then you’ll love the first listing! Located on the fringes of the Topanga State Park north-west of Santa Monica, LA, you’ve got untouched nature right at your doorstep as well as a mix of activities such as hiking, star-gazing, bird-watching, surfing and sunbathing on the nearby beaches. The property is eco-friendly, designed to minimise its impact on the surroundings, ultimately bringing you even closer to nature.
Rates start from €115 a night and it accommodates two guests.
One of the greatest natural environments in Northern America are the mighty, venerable redwood forests. Trust me, once you’re stood next to them you’ll feel very small indeed – they’re some of the tallest trees in the world and you can’t help but feel like you’ve been transported to a time long, long ago… So if you’re craving some fresh air, gorgeous surroundings and a chance to really clear your head, then you’re going to love this amazing wooden cabin in the forests of Cazadero!
You’ll be as snug as a bug thanks to the clever use of space. With room for 2 people, this would be a wonderful romantic retreat to help you get back in touch with nature and just take things nice and slowly far away from the noise and lights of urban areas. The cabin puts you in a perfect location for seeing rural Californian life with lots of charming towns close by. The Sonoma Coast State Park, which offers some of the finest coastal drives in all of California, is just a short drive away, so you’ve got plenty of day trips open to you!
Rates start from €158 a night and accommodates two guests.
Not really the kind of person who likes being too far away from civilisation? Then why not be right in the heart of the action instead? Do things a little differently with this quirky vintage trailer right by Downtown LA. The trailer itself is super cute – it’s a vintage number from 1954 and offers a cosy place for two people to cuddle up in. But that’s not all of course! The trailer itself is situated in a massive loft apartment that spans a whopping 6,000 sq/ft!
The loft gives you extra space to relax in, with bathrooms, showers, a kitchen and storage for you and other guests, and it’s a great opportunity to get to know other people and get some great tips for things to do in the area and cool places to try. Like I said, you’re right in the centre of LA with areas such as Chinatown and the Fashion District are right at your doorstep, and Hollywood is just a few stops away on the subway. Perfect for when you want to get settled into LA nice and quickly!
Rates start from €77 a night and accommodates two guests.
Back to nature again. This time round we’re going proper old-school – do things the old fashioned way at this traditional homesteader cabin! Here you can relax in a restored, rustic cabin in the California desert and prepare to be amazed by the starry night skies and views of the Milky Way above you. Set in 5 acres of land, the cabin offers you an opportunity to really get away from it all. The simple interiors will see you going back to basics, but all your essential amenities are there, including a queen-sized bed, a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and spacious outdoor areas where you can go stargazing… The night skies are so clear, you won’t even need a telescope to do it! Just sit back and enjoy one of Mother Nature’s greatest spectacles. :)
Local towns give you the opportunity to try some great food at proper diners, watch a film in a retro cinema or scope out some live music and cultural events. Nature lovers will definitely get their money’s worth here too, since the surrounding land is home to all sorts of desert wildlife such as rabbits, owls, roadrunners and more. In fact you might even come across a few tortoise nests!
Rates start from €103 a night and accommodates two guests. Extra guests can stay and camp on the site for an additional €30pp.
I think I’ve saved the best until last… Granted, this one is a teensy bit more expensive and definitely one to reserve for those super duper special moments, like a honeymoon, an anniversary, or even popping the big question! But it’s fair to say that this is an absolute dream, and even just looking at the pictures is enough to make me want to pack my bags and go!
Staying in a proper old-school Airstream is pretty darn cool as it is, but to have that and a beautiful setting that offers panoramic views of the mountains of Deer Creek sloping down to the Pacific Ocean in the distance… Your socks will be well and truly knocked off! Watch the morning mists roll over the hills and enjoy wonderfully slow sunsets towards evening. The Airstream itself has been transformed into a spacious studio, with a cosy double bed and cooking facilities on hand, plus your essential bathroom facilities as well. The huge terrace features lots of cosy furniture for but even when you’re tucked up in bed, huge ceiling-to-floor windows means that nothing will obstruct the views.
Rates start from €451 per night and accommodates up to three guests, if someone doesn’t mind being the third wheel!
