The Climate in the Caribbean

The Caribbean is, for many tourists, the epitome of a paradise. Located in the western rim of the Atlantic Ocean and north of the equator, the climate here is the definition of tropical. The Caribbean covers a large area and consists of several islands and archipelagos in the Caribbean Sea and the sea area between the islands. It belongs to the Central American subcontinent. A Rainforest climate prevails on the Caribbean islands with an average temperature of more than 20 degrees Celsius all year round. To determine the best time to travel to the Caribbean, the region must be geographically divided. That’s why I’ll give you a breakdown of the geographical locations of the various Caribbean islands. Then I will show you Climate tables for islands such as the Bahamas, Cuba, Grenada and the ABC Islands. Then I can show you when the best travel time is for the different islands and island states in the Caribbean. You’ll also find out when the best time to travel to take a Caribbean cruise…

Overview

The Location of the Caribbean Islands and its influence on the climate

Without a doubt, there is plenty of variety in the Caribbean! Geologists distinguish between the islands in the open Atlantic North in a couple of ways. There are the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, which in turn are distinguished between “The Windward Islands” and “Windward Islands”. Then there’s the open Atlantic South and the Western Caribbean. The open Atlantic North includes the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Greater Antilles consist of popular resorts like Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The influence of the northeastern trade is the reason that the Lesser Antilles are divided into two regions. The Windward Islands include St. Martin, Antigua and Barbuda, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia, Barbados and Grenada. The Windward islands include the ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. The open Atlantic South includes Trinidad and Tobago. San Andrés and Providencia, the Corn Islands, Isla de la Bahía and Cozumel are all part of the Western Caribbean. The Caribbean belongs to the American Mediterranean and reaches the  Cayman Trough. This is a 7,680 meter deep and 965-kilometre deep-water channel, which is located in the southeast on the Caribbean plate and in the northwest on the North American plate. The Cayman Trough is located between Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Honduras, the Gulf of Honduras and the Yucatan Basin. If the plate borders rub against each other, earthquakes can occur and rarely it can cause volcanic eruptions on the Caribbean islands.

The Best Time to Visit the Bahamas

The island nation of the Bahamas stretches from the southeastern coast of the US to the northwest coast of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Geographically, the Bahamas are counted as Central America because they lie south of Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. The climate in the Bahamas is subtropical. The average temperature in the summer months of June to September is 28 degrees Celsius, with temperatures reaching 32 degrees Celsius at noon. In the winter months, it doesn’t get much cooler. As a result of the warm Gulf Stream in the Atlantic, a mild climate prevails during winter. The daytime temperatures are on average around 25 to 26 degrees Celsius. In December, January and February it can even reach around 18 degrees at night! The main reason for this slight drop in temperature is the cool winds from North America. Thanks to the warm and pleasant weather, the Bahamas is inviting for a holiday all year round. In the months of June to November, however, is the hurricane season on the islands. Tropical cyclones and storms can make your holiday uncomfortable and, in the worst case, a risk. Therefore, this period is not recommended for travel to the Bahamas. The best travel time for the Bahamas is the months outside the hurricane season: December to May. With daytime temperatures between 25 and 29 degrees Celsius and a fresh breeze, it invites tourists from all over the world for a great holiday. Overall, the Bahamas in the open Atlantic North have a more moderate climate than other Caribbean islands. The temperature during the year doesn’t vary too much.

The Best Time to Visit Grenada

Grenada is one of the Windward Islands in the northern part of the Lesser Antilles. The island state of Grenada (officially Grenada state), consists of several small islands, of which the largest is Grenada. These islands of volcanic origin are located between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Inside the island of Grenada, it is mountainous. The mountains are the source of many small rivers. With an altitude of 840 meters, Mount Saint Catherine is the highest point on the island. Like other Caribbean islands, the climate on Grenada is tropical. However, unlike the other islands, a distinction is made between the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season is from January to May; the rainy season from June to December. During the rainy season, it rains almost every day on the island of the Lesser Antilles. In addition, the risk of tropical cyclones is greater, which is why this period is also recorded as the official hurricane season on Grenada. On rainy days, however, it does not mean that it rains through the entire day. The showers are usually in the morning or at noon and then return, while the warm sun is shining. Thus, if there is no hurricane, wonderful even in the rainy season a Grenada holiday can be made. The best months to go to Grenada and in general for the Leeward Islands are the months from January to May. Significantly less precipitation makes the climate in the dry season more pleasant and suitable for a beach holiday, diving or deep-sea fishing.

The Best Time to Visit the ABC-Islands Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao

In addition to the three ABC islands, a number of other islands and archipelagos are among the Windward Islands, the southern part of the Lesser AntillesAruba, Bonaire and Curacao, thanks to their geographical position off the coast of Venezuela and close to the equator have a very warm climate with very little rainfall. By protecting the Venezuelan coast, the northeastern trade has a very small impact on the weather on the ABC islands. Therefore, it is not humid compared to the other Caribbean islands, but rather dry and warm on average. Only in the months of October, November, December and January can you count on a few rainy days a month. However, the showers are very short, so they hardly affect your vacation. The best travel time for the ABC islands is thus the whole year. No matter what the month is, you can spend a fantastic holiday on the Caribbean dream islands. An average of eight to nine hours of sunshine per day and temperatures along the 30 degrees Celsius mark make this possible. But you do not have to worry about it getting too hot and stuffy. The sea breeze provides a pleasant and fresh wind..
