The Weather in Punta Cana During the Rainy Season

The rainy season in Punta Cana is from June to October. During this time you have to reckon with a higher rain probability. In addition, there is a higher humidity of over 80 per cent. While the weather in the summer months of June, July and August is tropically warm at over 31 degrees Celsius, in September and October you can expect equally high temperatures, but an even greater probability of rainfall. The month with the most rainfall is without a doubt October. Generally, the weather on the south coast is drier than on the north coast. If you plan your Punta Cana holiday during the rainy season, you don’t have to worry about the rain all the time. Usually, the showers come in violent bursts and pass after one or two hours again. After the tropical rain shower, the sun shows up again in front of a cloudless sky. It is unlikely that it will rain permanently for several days at a time. Therefore you don’t have to worry and can take your bargain holiday in the rainy season – preferably in the summer months. This is the big advantage of this time of year: The prices for a Punta Cana holiday decrease. Nevertheless, I advise against a holiday during the rainy season in September. During this time there is the biggest risk for hurricanes. Learn more about those in the next section.

The Weather in Punta Cana During the Hurricane Season

During the rainy season, there is also the hurricane season in Punta Cana. Warnings for this are in effect for the months May to November. During this time hurricanes can shake the weather in Punta Cana. The greatest probability of a hurricane is in September. The hurricanes form on the west coast of Africa, cross the Atlantic and pass by the Caribbean Sea. In most cases, the hurricanes do not reach the coast. On the Caribbean islands, a stormy wind then rages, thunderclouds come up and it rains in violent currents. The sea rages in high waves, so it is not suitable for swimming. If the hurricanes are strong, they can also reach the land.

A strong hurricane, which reached the Caribbean Islands, last occurred in September 2017. Hurricane Maria raged mainly on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, causing many floods, damage and deaths. The Dominican Republic was also hit by Hurricane Maria, although not as bad as Puerto Rico. In the Dom Rep, there were floods and some 350,000 people were without electricity. For some days a state of emergency was declared on the Caribbean island. The airport in Punta Cana was closed and the people sought shelter in the interior, as far away from the coast as possible. Hurricane Maria reached a wind speed of about 195 kilometres per hour in the Dominican Republic.

What does this mean for your holiday in Punta Cana??

If it is possible for you, it makes sense to avoid the month of September in particular for a holiday in Punta Cana. This is the most vulnerable month for hurricanes. On the other hand, Hurricane Maria in September 2017 showed that the Dominican Republic is well trained in disaster control. Despite the strong hurricane, no one was harmed. The power failures were repaired and only a few days after the hurricane the Dominican Republic looked the same again: tidy, clean and inviting for a holiday. I have to say though that Punta Cana and the entire Dominican Republic were lucky to not have been hit too hard by Hurricane Maria. Of course, that could have turned out quite differently. That is why hurricane danger in the Caribbean should not be taken lightly. Please consider carefully whether you can get your holiday at a time other than during the hurricane season. Before planning your holiday, check the weather forecasts for the Dominican Republic and the Foreign Office’s information on natural disasters. In the event of an emergency, it is important that you follow the advice of the authorities and hotel staff. They have been trained by the Civil Protection to deal with such situations and know best how to help you. If you want to find out what to do in the event of a hurricane before you arrive, take a look at the Foreign Office’s Hurricane Guide.

Best Time to Visit

My conclusion on the best travel time for Punta Cana

Punta Cana is especially inviting in our winter months and in spring its a dream to have a holiday under the palm trees. The best time to visit Punta Cana is between December and April. The most popular travel time and thus the high season is in February, followed by the months of March and April. But also the Christmas holidays are used for many a vacation in the Dominican Republic. The weather in Punta Cana is tropical, warm and humid all year round. Especially in the rainy season between June and October more precipitation falls. The summer months July and August are characterized by a tropical heat with a high humidity. In September, on the other hand, the danger of hurricanes on the Atlantic increases. As a rule of thumb, they tend to just roam the Caribbean islands and cause a lot of rain, wind and high waves. However, it can also happen that the hurricane reaches the country. The last time this happened was in September 2017 when Hurricane Maria struck the Caribbean. You can read all the information about the weather and the hurricane season in Punta Cana in the text above. Overall I would suggest you avoid September as a travel season for Punta Cana as much as possible. Good and cheap travel months outside the high season are the transition months November and May. Here you can spend a bargain holiday in the Dom Rep under good weather conditions. Above all though make sure you have an amazing time!
