I’ll be providing loads of information about the climate in Malta as well as handy tables with all the important stats in such as temperatures, rain fall and sunshine hours.

When is the best time to visit Malta?

As with many other destinations in the world, Malta is a country that you can visit any time of year. But if you’re looking for a holiday filled with sunshine, then there are certain months of the year you should stick to. With this in mind, the best time to visit Malta will be from May until October. During these months, the weather is simply marvellous. Temperatures will already be on the rise in April and by the time it gets to May, thermometers will be hovering at the 24°C mark. At night temperatures fall to 15°C, which is always a nice little respite from the hot sunshine.

July and August are the hottest days of the year with temperatures reaching up to 31 – 32°C. But don’t expect any refreshing rain showers to help cool you down – in fact it barely rains at all during this time of year, with maybe only up to 3 days in a month seeing a bit of rain. The days are at their longest in July and August as well, with the sun shining for up to 12 hours. The sea will also be at aroune 21 – 23°C, so it’s the perfect way to cool off from those sweltering temperatures.

Temperatures begin to sink ever slightly in September, with temperatures still at a toasty 28°C. October is also still nice and warm at 25°C, which is still perfect sunbathing weather. It’s even warm enough to go swimming too, since the water will be around 23°C. The only possible downside is the fact that there’ll be more rain. However all things considered, this is still a great time to go, especially when prices will be slightly lower at this time as well!

Those who are less interested in getting a suntan and swimming can select and alternative travel time for Malta. This alternative time period is from November to April. The daytime temperature ranges between 12 & 16 degrees Celsius. Water temperature is around 15 degrees Celsius so I would not recommend swimming in the sea. Instead, you can go hiking and explore other sights and historic buildings. If you travel to Malta in these alternative months, you have to cope with the increase in rainy days per month. It can rain up to 21 days in a month.

How is the climate in Malta?

The central location of Malta in the Mediterranean gives it a subtropical, Mediterranean climate. The typical characteristics of this climate are hot and rainy summers and mild and humid winters. In the summer months, the temperature in Malta can reach up to 32 degrees Celsius in August. Up to 40 degrees Celsius can be reached from time to time, especially in the hottest months of July and August.  Overall, the rainfall in Malta is low, with the least rainfall in the summer months. July and August are not only the hottest, but also the least rainy months of the year. On average, it rains for up to 3 days. It is more humid in winter. In January and December it rains comparatively much more than summer – up to 18 to 21 days per month. These months are characterized not only by increased precipitation, but also by the lowest temperatures around 16 to 17 degrees Celsius. At night, it can be really fresh with less than 10 degrees Celsius. Nevertheless, these temperatures are much milder than in winter time in Germany.

A special feature of the climate in Malta is the Scirocco. It is a hot wind that blows from Africa across the Mediterranean and thus also over the islands of Malta. In Malta, the Scirocco is called Xklokk. Depending on the region, the Scirocco is named differently. The Xklokk usually blows over the Maltese islands during the summer months. It brings a damp heat that is unbecoming to many. Even in spring and autumn, it results in an unforgiving heat. The Maltese islands are flat so the Xklokk has a big influence on the weather.

The Best Time to Travel to Malta –  My Conclusion

Malta is one of the most historic holiday destinations. The island has so many highlights waiting for you. Although you can no longer visit the Azure Window (it collapsed in 2018) there are many other things worth visiting. If you want to experience the ultimate summer holiday, where you can sample the beautiful beaches of Malta, I would recommend the travel time of May to October. Hot temperatures are guaranteed. Even in the winter months, Spring-like temperatures make this an appealing holiday destination. Malta in Winter gives you the perfect weather for an active holiday.
