Whats the Climate Like in Egypt?

The climate in Egypt is subtropically warm and dry. Due to its location within the North African dry belt, there is a desert climate in most parts of Egypt. Only in the coastal regions on the Mediterranean is the climate more Mediterranean. Here during the winter time, you can actually get rain. On the coast of the Red Sea, as inland, there is a subtropical desert climate. However, the sea breeze brings a fresh, cool breeze. This makes the warm temperatures more bearable than in the desert regions. There is very little to no rainfall here. The daytime temperatures in July are 31 degrees Celsius in northern Port Said, 34 degrees Celsius in the capital Cairo, 41 degrees Celsius in the tourist centre on the Red Sea, Hurghada, and 41 degrees Celsius in Aswan in southeastern Egypt. In spring, from March to June, a hot sand and dust wind coming from the south, the Chamsin, blows through the country.

In the winter months of November to February, the daytime temperatures amount to around 20 degrees Celsius. The nights can be cooler at around ten degrees Celsius, but overall they are still mild. Particularly in the coastal regions of Egypt, the climate is mild and tolerable all year round. On the Mediterranean coast, there may even be a few rainy days in December, January and February. In the desert areas, on the other hand, the rain probability is almost zero. There are a maximum of two rainy days per year for Aswan and Luxor, east of the Nile. This leads to heat waves on some days in the summer with temperatures beyond the 45-degree limit.

Whats the weather like in Egypt?

The weather in Egypt is warm year-round. During the summer, temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius are pretty common. Even at night the temperatures are warm at around 24 degrees Celsius. In the winter months it gets a bit cooler, but at 24 to 28 degrees Celsius it is still sunny and warm during the day. At night, it cools to a minimum of ten degrees Celsius between December and March. The rain probability in Egypt is vanishingly small throughout the year. There is a difference in climate between the different regions, which I will show you in the other sub-sections..

Weather on the Mediterranean Coast and the Climate

On the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, the climate ranges from Mediterranean to subtropical . The weather is characterized by very warm summers and mild winters. Especially the weather on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. It can even rain during the winter time. Temperatures range from 17 to 20 degrees a day in December and January, and eight to eleven degrees at night. In the summer you can count on Alexandria or Port Said in the north of Egypt having temperatures between 29 and 30 degrees Celsius every day. Even at night, temperatures between 20 and 23 degrees Celsius are reached in June, July, August and September. Therefore you have the perfect conditions for a beach holiday in Egypt during the summer. As a result the best travel time for the Mediterranean coast are the months of April to November.

ÄWeather on the Coast & the Red Sea

Most Egypt vacationers spend their holidays on the coast of the Red Sea. Above all, the tourist centre Hurghada is popular with numerous kinds of travellers. But other destinations such as Sharm el Sheikh, El Gouna or Marsa Alam are popular tourist destinations on the Red Sea. The year-round warm weather means that for every month of the year you can have a wonderful holiday. The climate of the Red Sea is generally subtropical, but temperate by the sea breeze than inland. The best weather for a beach holiday is the summer months between April and November. Average temperatures between 30 degrees Celsius a day and 20 degrees Celsius at night make the perfect beach holiday. If you want to avoid crowded beaches and hotels it would be best in Spring to fly between mid-March and April to the Red Sea.

Weather and Climate in the Nile Valley and in the Desert

The Nile Delta, around Cairo, has a climate comparable to that on the Mediterranean coast. You can also get small rain showers here too, however, the temperatures remain mild. In the spring, temperatures are higher on the Nile Delta than on the Mediterranean. The maximum temperature of 45 degrees Celsius proves this. In the summer months, the warm weather is easier to manage because the humidity is lower.

In the Nile Valley, there is a semi-arid oasis climate. West of the Nile lies the  Libyan Desert, which occupies about two-thirds of Egypt. East of the Nile and down to the Red Sea is the Arabian Desert. Here is an arid climate. The upper Nile Valley around the cities of Aswan, Luxor and Dahkla is very dry. In the summer months, it is very hot here with averages over 40 degrees Celsius. The winters are mild, at night it can even be a bit cold. For your dessert tour, we recommend you travel during the months of March to May and September to November as the best travel time. Here the weather is not as hot as in the summer and your journey through the history of Egypt is nothing in the way.

Historical Background:

The Nile has not only got an economic importance for Egypt but above all a historical one. Due to its special characteristics, one of the earliest high civilizations in the world, Ancient Egypt, developed on its shores. The black mud that remained after the annual Nile floods guaranteed a fruitful harvest, which is why more and more people between 3500 and 3000 BC settled here. At the same time, people moved away from the Sahara, which did not provide good agricultural conditions. The Nile Valley and coastal regions had better climatic conditions to live on. That’s the way it is today. The Nile is the only river in the world to cross the subtropical dry belt of North Africa. It is considered the longest river in the world and has produced the second largest desert in the world, the Sahara.

My Conclusion on the Best Travel Time for Egypt

Egypt can be visited throughout the year. If you would like to spend a nice summer holiday in Egypt with guaranteed sunshine, the warmer spring, summer and fall months are better for you than winter. However, expect a warmer climate even in the Egyptian winter than in this country. Therefore, Egypt is also an attractive destination in winter. The best travel time for Egypt are the months  from mid-March to mid-May  and from mid-September to mid-November, Can you brave the hot and dry temperatures in summer, these are also perfect for a seaside holiday on the coasts. For a desert tour, I advise of the summer months, as the temperatures can rise to as high as 50 degrees Celsius in the air and there is no chance for rain.
