The Highlights in Chile

Chile has many highlights to offer, with the best travel time depending on the geographical location. While the Atacama Desert can be visited year-round, Chile’s south is an interesting destination, especially in the South American summer.

Easter Island

The best time to visit the Easter Island is between October and March. The warmest time will be in January and February with up to 29 degrees Celsius. The remaining months on the Easter Islands are cooler and rainier, but less touristy. It rains most frequently in April and May with an average of 13 rainy days per month. It remains relatively dry in October and November with nine rainy days. The water temperature on Easter Island in March gets up to a pleasant 25 degrees, so the sea is much warmer than on Chile’s Pacific coast.

Patagonia in Chile and Argentina

Patagonia’s climate is significantly influenced by the Andes, as the best time to visit Patagonia is the South American summer. The western part of Patagonia is characterized by strong precipitation, east of the Andes it remains mostly dry. Typically in Patagonia, there is a strong and cool wind, which can occur all year round and throughout the region. The peak holiday season for Patagonia, including Torres del Paine National Park and Lake District, is in December, January and February. Bad weather conditions, heavy rain and low temperatures characterize the winter months.

The Atacama Desert

The Atacama Desert in northern Chile is suitable year-round as a tourist destination. However, the summer months of October to May are the most popular travel season with quite pleasant temperatures. In winter, temperatures drop to a harsh -20 degrees at night. Lagoons freeze and there are fewer animals to watch. The region is dry all year round, precipitation is very rare and it tends to happen mostly in the winter months.

Skiing in Chile

The best time for a ski holiday in Chile is between  June and August, sometimes you can even get down the slopes until September. The ski resorts in Chile will make the heart of every winter sports fan beat faster. In total there are 18 ski resorts in Chile, the largest of which is El Colorado / Farellones with a slope length of 50 kilometers.

My conclusion on the best travel time for Chile

Chile is worth a trip whatever the season! South America is a great place for escaping winter. Especially the north which can be visited as a destination all year round. However, there is also the Easter Island and Central Chile attract which have some pretty mild temperatures. In the Chilean winter months, you should avoid the south for the most part, especially in Patagonia. The winter makes the weather conditions for many tours impossible. In winter, especially the many ski resorts attract winter sports enthusiasts to Chile. No matter what season, Chile will delight you with its unique landscape and culture!
