Climate and the best time to visit Thailand
The Asian state of Thailand and its numerous islands are exposed to a special climate. Located on the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, monsoon winds affect the tropical climate. Therefore, it is common to divide the Kingdom of Thailand into two climate zones: Northern Thailand and Southern Thailand.
Thailand’s north is surrounded by the states of Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. There is no access to the sea in northern Thailand. Nevertheless, the north attracts thousands of tourists to its popular destinations such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The best time to visit Northern Thailand is from November to February. During these months the temperature rises up to 33 degrees Celsius thanks to the Northwest monsoon. If you travel between March and May the temperature rises up to 40 degrees Celsius, which is unbearable for most Europeans. The rainy season in northern Thailand starts in June and lasts until October.
In southern Thailand, the weather conditions are not as variable as in the north. The south is not influenced by monsoons and lures tourists with beautiful beaches on the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. This makes it more attractive to travellers. Thailand’s most popular destinations like Bangkok, Phuket, Khao Lak and Koh Samui are located in the south of the kingdom. The best travel time for southern Thailand is November to March, but the weather can vary from island to island. In order to find the best travel time for any region in Thailand, I list the climate tables for Central Thailand, Southwest Thailand, Southeast Thailand and North Thailand individually. The best time to visit Southeast Thailand: January to April & late July to early September
In the Gulf of Thailand are the fascinating islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao located. If you want to spend an unforgettable beach holiday, I recommend you a trip during the months of January, February, March, April, July, August and September. During this time, temperatures range around 30 degrees Celsius and on rainy days, there are just short rain showers that quickly disappear again. The humidity in Southeast Thailand is very high throughout the year due to the high temperatures of the tropical climate. The best weather conditions are from January to March. Therefore, it’s peak season for Koh Samui and the other islands in southeastern Thailand which makes holiday deals very expensive at this time. Travels are a little cheaper and still perfect for a beach holiday in the Gulf of Thailand from late July to early September. If you’re looking for a great bargain you should plan your holiday in the Gulf of Thailand during this time. The rainy season in southeast Thailand is from May to December. From mid-July to early September, there might be the odd showers every now and then, but it’s nothing to worry about. I wouldn’t recommend you to travel from the end of September to December. During this period, it can be very stormy on the islands in the Gulf of Thailand, making a beach holiday almost impossible. You can expect heavier rain showers in June, which is why this month is not the best time to travel to Southeast Thailand. The months of April and May are the hottest of the year because there may be no wind at all. If you want to travel to the southeast of Thailand during this time, you should make sure that your hotel is air-conditioned. Due to the calm, the heat is hard to bear the average European
