The months of December , January , February , March and April are the best time to travel. That’s why many vacationers use the months of low season May, June and November as travel time. With maximum daytime temperatures of 27 degrees Celsius and water temperatures between 23 and 26 degrees it can be perfectly pleasant on the islands. Note, however, that from June to November hurricane season prevails in the Bahamas. Below, you can find detailed information on the hurricane season.

Geography of the Bahamas

The Bahamas consists of numerous islands, 700 in total, and over 2,400 coral reefs. You’ll find the island state where the Caribbean meets the Atlantic. It is one of the West Indies and forms the northeastern edge of the Caribbean. Geographically, the island state belongs to Central America. But although the Bahamas are part of the Caribbean, the individual islands lie in the Atlantic. Depending on the resort in the Bahamas, you can easily make a trip to Cuba or Florida or connect the places on a round trip. Florida is located northwest and Cuba southwest of the Bahamas.

A special feature is the incredible extent of the island state. The west-east latitude is about 750 kilometres and the north-south extent is 650 kilometres. Thus, the islands occupy a huge area in the Atlantic. The islands are rather flat in nature. The highest mountain is Mount Alvernia on the island of Cat Iceland at 63 metres.

Of the numerous islands, are not all inhabited and not all touristically developed. Just 30 islands are inhabited, including New Providence with the country’s capital Nassau, and the island of Grand Bahama. Most people live on these two islands.

Climate in the Bahamas

The islands of the Bahamas cover a vast area and yet the climate is almost the same on all the Bahamas. Generally there is a subtropical climate. But overall, it is milder on the islands and not as hot as on other Caribbean islands. The Gulf Stream provides a mild climate, especially in the winter months. It can be fresher when the cooler winds from the North American mainland influence the islands. In particular, they affect winter temperatures in the northern Bahamas. Furthermore, the tropical and hot air that comes from the Caribbean affects the climate in the Bahamas.

The year-round mild climate ensures low temperature fluctuations over the course of the year. This means that it is warm summer all year round. Nevertheless, there are small differences between the seasons winter and summer. In winter, daytime temperatures range between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius and with six to nine rainy days comparatively little rainfall. The humidity is lower than in the summer months, which is noticeable better for many tourists. In the summer, temperatures rise to 32 degrees Celsius and at night it does not get colder than 24 degrees Celsius. Due to the cool wind, which is permanently present, these high temperatures are still bearable. The humidity increases enormously in the summer and the rainy days are at a maximum of 17 days in September.

Weather in the Bahamas – regional differences

In general, the weather is very similar in the Bahamas and all the islands. However, there is a difference in weather between the southern and northern islands. Basically, it is cooler on the northern islands than on the southern ones. You will be haunted by the cool wind blowing from North America. This leads to the cooling down of the temperatures, especially in the winter months. The wind can cause the nightly temperatures are no longer at, for example, 17 degrees Celsius in January, but fall to up to 10 degrees Celsius. The weather in the southern islands of the Bahamas is not influenced by the wind from North America. Therefore, the temperatures in the south of the Bahamas are always slightly higher.

Hurricane season in the Bahamas

The Bahamas are located in the catchment area of tropical cyclones, or hurricanes as they’re more commonly known. The hurricane season in the Bahamas is prevalent during the summer months of JuneJulyAugustSeptember, October and November . During this time you have to reckon with heavy storms . The likelihood of a hurricane hitting the Bahamas is relatively unlikely. As a rule, the hurricanes don’t make it to the islands of the Bahamas. But if you look at Hurricane Joaquin who hit the southern part of the Bahamas in 2015, you must always be prepared for a hurricane these months. For this reason, I don’t recommend the hurricane season or the summer months as the best time to visit the Bahamas.

My conclusion on the best travel time for the Bahamas

If you want to enjoy paradise on earth without restrictions, I recommend the months of DecemberJanuaryFebruaryMarch and April as the best time to visit the Bahamas. In these months you will find the most ideal weather conditions. The temperatures are not too hot and the humidity isn’t too high. The sunshine duration is the longest in these months and the number of rainy days is low. Many holidaymakers choose the off season as the best time to travel to the Bahamas. These include the months of May to November. The hotel prices are cheaper than in the main travel time and there are fewer tourists on the way. However, the hurricane season in the Bahamas, which lasts until November, begins in June. For this reason I don’t recommend to you the months of June, July, August, September, October and November as travel time for the Bahamas. Only the month of May in the off-season can be another optimal travel time with less crowded hotels and resorts.
