The best winter holiday destinations

Taken time off in winter but don’t know what the best destinations in January are? You might not think it, but you actually have loads of opportunities open to you. This is one of the best times of year in terms of snow conditions in mountainous regions such as Austria, Switzerland and France. However if you’re not really up for bracing the cold, then swap the snow for a bit of sunshine in destinations such as Thailand, the Canary Islands, Cuba or other destinations in the Caribbean. If you want to use the winter as a good opportunity for pampering, then of course we have loads of fantastic spa hotels in Ireland where you can spend a few nights and simply let the stress melt away! The best destinations in January – sunshine or skiing?

Have you already decided where you’d like to spend your holiday in January? Well, it’s fair to say that you can’t go wrong with a skiing holiday at this time of year! No matter what ski resort you go for in popular destinations such as France, Italy and Switzerland, you’re pretty much guaranteed a solid amount of snow thanks to the frosty temperatures. And who knows – maybe you might come across a celebrity or two during your travels! If you’re someone who’d rather escape the cold climates, then you’ll be glad to know that there are plenty of fantastic sunny destinations in January where you can escape to for an unforgettable beach holiday, or even do a bit of sightseeing on a city break. The Indian Ocean enjoys glorious, summerly temperatures, making destinations such as Thailand, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and the Seychelles a delight to visit at this time of year. Another fantastic region to visit is the Caribbean, escpecially Cuba and the Dominican Republic. If you’re worried that your budget won’t stretch far enough, or you don’t really fancy hopping on a long-haul flight, then the Canary Islands are a classic sun destination – temperatures are lovely and warm all year round! In Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria it’ll still be 21 degrees at this time of year!

If that’s still not warm enough for you, then you should visit the Dominican Republic or Cuba. In January you can expect hot temperatures of up to 29 degrees as well as very few rainy days. The storms will also have calmed down by December and with a bit of luck you might be able to observe humpback whales, a real unforgettable experience. The colder season is also the perfect time to go for a little spa break, whether at home or abroad. Ireland is home to some amazing spa resorts up and down the country, so you’re certain to find some brilliant hotel deals in no time at all.
