Sights and Attractions in Vienna
Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The cultural and culinary offerings in the Austrian capital makes Vienna an attractive destination for many travellers. A city break in Vienna is suitable for everyone regardless of whether you’re travelling alone, as a couple or as a family. The city has something for every taste. Exciting days in Vienna are guaranteed with the following tips.
Musical and cultural highlights in Vienna
For many visitors, Stephansdom – or St. Stephen’s Cathedral – is the symbol of the city. The cathedral is the most important example of Gothic architecture in Austria. It is really worth climbing the 343 steps in the cathedral’s tower, since you’ll have a breathtaking view over the city at the top!
Do you want to go to see the famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in concert? You can admire them in well-known venues like the Staatsoper, the Wiener Konzerthaus or the Musikverein. Together with the Vienna Boys’ Choir, the Vienna Philharmonic belongs to the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle, a body of musicians who perform regularly in the Imperial Chapel in Vienna. Your city break wouldn’t be complete without a night out at the Vienna Philharmonic.
The historical buildings and parks on Vienna’s 5.3-kilometre long Ringstrasse are also worth seeing. It is home to the most important sights in Vienna. The Hofburg Palace, the town hall, Stephansdom and the parliament buildings line the Ringstrasse. My Holidayguru tip: take tram line 1 from Karlsplatz/Oper to explore historical Vienna. The tram drives along part of the Ringstrasse past the Danube Canal and the Hundertwasserhaus before finally ending at the Wiener Prater. You can get to the amusement park in the Prater by walking along the Prater Hauptallee. The well-known amusement park is a highlight of any holiday in Vienna. There you can find lots of restaurants and attractions. It’s a must for fans of ghost trains, carousels and roller coasters. It’s so much fun for adults and children alike. The Prater is also home to one of the oldest Ferris wheels in the world. A ride on the Wiener Riesenrad gives you a wonderful view over the capital from a height of 65 metres. You definitely don’t want to miss that!
Explore Vienna’s magnificent palaces
Follow in the footsteps of Empress Sisi and visit Schönbrunn Palace. This is the most visited attraction in Austria. Schönbrunn Palace and its park and gardens have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Holidaymakers to Vienna will also find the oldest zoo in the world in the park of the imperial summer residence. More than 2 million people go to the Tiergarten Schönbrunn every year. The Belvedere is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is made up of the Upper and Lower Belvedere. In the neighbouring botanic garden, you can wile away the hours in one of Vienna’s most idyllic spots. You can admire all sorts of different plant species from all over the world and let your mind wander.
Culinary highlights in the Austrian capital
Holidaymakers in Vienna aren’t just blown away by the sights in Vienna. The city also offers a wide range of culinary delights. Countless restaurants offer locals and tourists dishes from different countries across the world. There’s something for every taste here.
Specialities from Viennese cuisine include Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes), Goulash and Wiener Schnitzel as well as Tafelspitz (boiled beef or veal in broth). You should definitely try all these dishes during your holiday in Vienna! The Austrian capital is also famous for its coffee culture. If you love caffeine, there’s nothing left to do but to visit one of the traditional Viennese coffee houses. There you need to try a mix of Viennese delicacies like Sachertorte, Palatschinken (pancakes) and Apfelstrudel. These really sweeten up your days in the city.
For all deli lovers, a visit to the Naschmarkt is a must – the market features over 120 stalls and restaurants also provide visitors with international specialities. What’s on offer ranges from Viennese and Italian to Vietnamese and Indian.
Vienna City Breaks – find the best flight and hotel deals here
Do you want to spend some lovely days in Vienna but need a hotel? No problem! I find the best deals for breaks in Vienna every day. Vienna is full of different accommodation. It ranges from luxury hotels and up-market boutique hotels to budget hotels. There is also a big choice of Airbnb properties.
Vienna International Airport is 20 kilometres southeast of the city centre. Aer Lingus operates direct flights from Dublin. There are different ways to get from the airport to the centre of Vienna, but the City Airport Train is the quickest way for holidaymakers to reach the city centre costing €12. However, the cheaper way to travel is by tram. This journey only lasts 8 minutes longer and costs just 3,90€. Another alternative airport is Bratislava. The Slovakian capital is just an hour’s drive away, and you’ll often find that flights to Bratislava are considerably cheaper than direct to Vienna. You can get a coach to the centre of Vienna from just €5 – €8 each way. If you don’t mind the longer journey and you’re really tight on a budget, then this might be an option to consider!
Do you want to go on holiday to the Austrian capital? Then make sure you plan enough time for your trip to Vienna so you can explore this diverse city properly. I’d love to take care of any of your individual travel queries for a stay in Vienna!
