Booking a holiday to Thailand

If you want an affordable holiday to a paradise destination then Thailand is the one to go to. There are so many islands to explore and beautiful places to discover. A plus is that when you get there the cost of living is pretty low, so you don’t have to spend a fortune whilst you are there. You can choose between a beach holiday in a tropical paradise or visit some of the most amazing cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai. There are plenty of options for accommodation, you can stay in an all-inclusive hotel or stay in a quirky home from AirBnB. Whether you want a luxury getaway or an authentic experience with Thai culture, the deals that I find for you will suit you.

The best time to visit Thailand – when to go

Thailand has a tropical climate. Temperatures are hot all year round. The rainy season doesn’t happen at the same time across the country. Because of this, the best time to travel varies depending on the location of your desired destination.

Do you want to go to Bangkok, the River Kwai and Koh Chang? The average temperature in central Thailand is 30 degrees. The rainy season lasts from May to October. In these months, you’ll find cheap deals for central Thailand. The best time to travel is from January to March. The temperatures reach 32-34 degrees then.

In northern Thailand, there are three seasons, the cool season, the hot season and the rainy season. Do you want to travel to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai or Phayao when it’s cooler? Then the months of November and February are the best. The hot season lasts from March until May and these months are unsuited to a holiday in Thailand. The temperatures range from 30 to 40 degrees. The cheapest time to travel to Thailand is between June and October. The rainy season is in full swing then.

The rainy period lasts the longest in southern Thailand. It is best to fly to Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak between December and April. The months between January and April are ideal for travelling to Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. From the middle of July to the beginning of September you can have a cheap holiday in southern Thailand. I wouldn’t recommend a trip between the end of September and December. It is stormy then and a beach holiday isn’t possible.

Flights from Ireland to Thailand

Unfortunately there are no direct flights to Thailand, but luckily no matter where you fly to in Thailand you normally only have to deal with just one stopover each way. The cheapest airport to fly to from Ireland is Bangkok, where prices usually start from around €400 – €440 for the return flights. Flying to Phuket from Ireland starts from around €450 – €460, where Krabi usual starts at around €500. You’ll normally find the cheapest flights to Thailand departing from Dublin.

If you’re looking for cheap flights to Thailand, I recommend having a look at my Flight Finder tool, which browses and compares loads of flights to get you the best deal.

Mini Thailand Travel Guide

Vibrant cities on your holiday in Thailand

Thailand is a diverse country. There are endless possibilities on offer for travellers. Bathers can relax on Thailand’s dreamy beaches. Culture lovers treasure the country because of its many temples and palaces. I’m going to introduce the most popular cities in Thailand now.

Bangkok – the perfect starting point for a round trip of Thailand

Bangkok is one of the main transport hubs in Southeast Asia. Holidaymakers use the Thai capital as a starting point for round trips through Thailand. It’s worth exploring the lively metropolis before you start your round trip. Thanks to its malls, Bangkok is heaven for shopaholics. Khao San Road is a paradise for backpackers. There, you’ll find cheap accommodation, clubs, stalls, and snack bars. A tour along the river Chao Phraya is very popular among travellers on holiday in Thailand. Sights in the capital include the Grand Palace, the Wat Phra Kaew or Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the floating markets. The city has an exciting nightlife for party animals. The 329 metre-high Baiyoke Tower II is also worth seeing. This is currently the second-tallest building in Thailand. There is a breath-taking view of the city from the top. There’s so much to experience in Bangkok!

Chiang Mai – the green oasis in northern Thailand

The provincial capital, Chiang Mai, is known as the rose of the north. The city boasts almost as many temples as the capital with around 200 temples. The symbol of Chiang Mai is the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. The temple is on top of a 1,200-metre-high mountain. From there, holidaymakers have a breath-taking view over Chiang Mai. On the banks of the river Ping, night owls can visit the night bazaar. There are so many different things on offer there. Locals sell antiques, fabrics, and typical Thai dishes. The market is a real must for any holidaymaker in Thailand!

Do you want to discover the mountainous north of Thailand? Chiang Mai is the perfect base for this. You can also take a tour to the island in the middle of the city and have a sit down in Nong Buak Haad City Park. Many locals also love relaxing in the peaceful atmosphere of the park. One of the biggest festivals in Thailand is called Loy Krathong. Locals decorate baskets with banana leaves, flowers, candles and incense sticks. As the baskets float away so too do the worries of past years. Visit the festival during your holiday in Thailand and you’ll experience a phenomenal spectacle!

Thailand – an island paradise

White, sandy beaches, palm trees and clear blue sea are what everyone expects of a trip to a Thai island. The hotels on the islands don’t only stand out because of their dreamy location. Many of them also offer superb service, divine pools and amazing wellness treatments. I’m now going to tell you about some of the most popular islands in Thailand.

Koh Samui – a holiday in the Gulf of Thailand

Koh Samui is one of the most popular islands for a holiday in Thailand. The tourist centre of the third-biggest island in the country is on Chaweng Beach. Koh Samui’s longest beach attracts lots of holiday-goers to Thailand every year. Chaweng is very popular for its nightlife as it has countless restaurants, bars and clubs. A true surfers’ paradise is Lamai Beach. This is the second-biggest beach on the island after Chaweng Beach. The nightlife around Lamai Beach can really keep up with what’s on offer at Chaweng. If you want to spend your holiday in Thailand away from the masses, the island’s quieter north coast is perfect for you. Maenam Beach, Bophut Beach and Bang Rak Beach are made for relaxing days. Koh Samui’s impressive waterfalls and unique plant and animal life make hearts soar.

Koh Phangan – dreamy beaches and undisturbed nature

The island of Koh Phangan enchants holidaymakers with its long sandy beaches, crystal-clear sea and mighty palm trees. There, you can expect relaxing days in heavenly surroundings. Nature lovers absolutely adore the island. The green hills of Koh Phangan are home to all sorts of exotic animals. A popular destination on the island is the Phaeng Waterfall. Countless footpaths lead you up the waterfall to the mountain summit. The coral reefs are amazing for snorkelling and diving trips. Haad Rin Beach is on the south coast. This beach has the highest density of clubs on the island and it is here that the famous Full Moon Parties take place. Haad Rin Beach is the number one address for party animals. A trip to Wat Pho is perfect for the health-conscious travellers among you. You can get a massage there and use the herbal sauna.

Phuket – a trip to the biggest island in Thailand

The most popular island destination in Thailand is Phuket. Phuket attracts countless holidaymakers with its luxurious hotels. If you want some peace and quiet by the sea, Phuket’s most northerly and longest beach, Mai Khao Beach, is perfect for you. There, you can find renowned resorts in a divine location. Travellers can also relax without interruption on Nai Thon Beach, Nai Harn Beach or in Panwa Bay. The party animals among you should head to Patong Beach. You’ll never be bored there! Do you want an adventure when you’re in Thailand? Then you should book a sailing or quad bike tour. Cultural highlights on the island include the 45-metre-tall Big Buddha, the old town and Wat Chalong, the biggest temple complex on the island.

Koh Chang – a holiday on Elephant Island

After Phuket, Koh Chang is the second-biggest island in Thailand. It’s situated right next to the Cambodian border, 300 kilometres southeast of Bangkok. On Koh Chang, travellers will find palm-fringed sandy beaches. Popular places are White Sand Beach, Lonely Beach, and Koh KoodKlong Prao is the longest beach on the island. There are lots of hotels there. The accommodation on offer on White Sand Beach is the most varied. There is something for every taste from luxury, 5-star hotels and beach resorts to simple bungalows with no air conditioning.

If you want to keep active on holiday, a hike to one of the countless waterfalls on Koh Chang is ideal. The colourful underwater world also attracts divers and snorkelers to the dreamy island. The island is made up of rugged mountains and undisturbed jungle. Koh Chang is a tropical paradise. I promise that a holiday in Thailand on this island will be unforgettable!

Must-know – planning your holiday to Thailand

Is it your first journey to the Land of Smiles? I have a few helpful tips for your holiday to Thailand if it is.

If you don’t want to stay in Thailand longer than 30 days, you don’t need a visa. Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Thailand. It’s possible to apply for a 30-day extension of stay but you must do this before your permission to stay expires. Are you going to travel from Thailand to other Asian countries during your stay? You’ll need a visa for another 30 days to enter Thailand again. I have a holiday guru tip for you: copy all important documents before your holiday to Thailand. If you can give in a copy of your documents, you can get a quick replacement for lost documents at the embassy. This means you can continue your adventure in Thailand quickly if something does go wrong.
