Book the best deals on this much-loved Canary Island
A Tenerife holiday is what most people dream about in work! Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and the most popular. It’s no secret why, really. This bustling resort sees almost 3,000 hours of sunshine per year and little to no rainfall from June to September. With a wide variety of activities and gorgeous scenery, Tenerife makes for an ideal summer holiday!
Although Tenerife is famous for its beaches, it also offers a great terrain for mountain biking and hiking. These trails range from easy to difficult. This island also has some delicious wineries that you can visit to try some fine Spanish wine.
Flights to Tenerife
Tenerife is the only Canary Island that is served by two airports. Tenerife South Airport (or Reina Sofia Airport) is busier than Tenerife North Airport due to its proximity to the island’s popular holiday resorts. Dublin, Knock, Cork and Shannon Airports all fly directly to Tenerife. The airports in Donegal and Kerry have layovers. You can fly from Dublin to either airport in Tenerife for just over €100, at the minimum. Some flights from Knock airport to Tenerife are the same price, but there’s a limited selection of dates. Ryanair, Aer Lingus and TUI fly directly to the island.
Climate during your Tenerife Holiday
There’s a good reason why Tenerife is known as the “island of eternal spring”! After all, these islands are off the north coast of Africa. The best time for a Tenerife holiday is in August. However, the climate is favourable from April to October. The island’s beaches will usually be crammed with sun chasers and holidaymakers, with temperatures reaching up to 24 degrees Celsius.
The best time to swim in the waters of Tenerife’s beaches is in September, where the temperature of the water is a warm 24 degrees. Surfing season is usually from October to March.
The coldest months are December, January and February, where temperatures dip as low as 14 degrees but as high as 20 degrees. You’ll find blue skies and beaming sunshine throughout the year. December is the wettest month in Tenerife but weather sees as little as five days of rain on average during this month.
Interestingly enough, you can see snow form on the top of Pico del Teide, which is the tallest mountain in Spain, during the winter months!
Popular Destinations to visit in Tenerife
Santa Cruz is the laid-back capital city of Tenerife. This town really comes alive in February and March during carnival – with the streets and squares overrun with colourful costumes, live music and parades. The unspoiled beauty of Playa de las Teresitas is a major reason you should consider a holiday here! Some of its major sights include the Auditorio de Tenerife, the Parliament buildings of the Canary Islands and La Laguna University.
Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz is a town situated on the north of the island and has some fantastic nightlife spots. However, it’s the resort’s beautiful beaches like Playa Jardín that have put this place on the map. Its distinctive volcanic sands stretch 1km from Punta Brava to Castillo de San Felipe. The resort’s vibrant gardens are also a treat for the eyes: here you’ll cacti, flowers and rare plants. If you seek a quieter beach, head to the more low-key Playa Martiánez.
Playa de las Américas
Playa de las Americas is where you get the archetypal Tenerife party scene! Built in the 1960s, this resort is crammed with British restaurants and pubs and tourists from all over Europe. The younger crowds flock here for the Veronicas Strip where the party doesn’t stop – even after sunrise. You’ll find golden sand beaches here and water sports like jet skiing, scuba diving and boat excursions are big here. It’s also got the biggest LGBT scene on the island that is welcoming to all!
This city is just inland from Santa Cruz and boasts some beautifully traditional Spanish architecture with palaces and traditional houses from the 17th century. This city has the moniker of being the “religious capital” of Tenerife due to the Bishop’s Palace being set here and has some beautiful churches and cathedrals like the Iglesia de Santo Domingo and La Laguna’s Cathedral. It’s a great spot to check out Spanish history and art during your Tenerife holiday!
This former fishing town is now one of the busiest resorts in Tenerife. Los Cristianos has beautiful beaches and bustling harbour. Here, you’ll be able to enjoy fishing trips, pleasure cruises, outings on glass-bottom boats and scuba diving! If you’re looking for a quieter Tenerife holiday, then perhaps give Los Cristianos a miss – but do take a day trip here! Playa de las Vistas has stretches of golden sand so bring a book and chill out while you’re here! For a family-friendly experience, make sure to visit Aqualand and Siam Park, two great, elaborate waterparks that are nearby.
