Let’s face it – Irish weather just doesn’t cut it a lot of the time! If you’re looking to escape the gloomier climates at home without having to spend a fortune, you’re in the right place – this is where you’ll find all of my most recent sun holiday packages that I come across as I’m search for the cheapest holiday deals departing from Ireland. Whether it’s a romantic getaway to Greece or just having a bitta craic in Benidorm, I’ve always got my eyes peeled for cheap offers to all of the top sun destinations loved by Irish holidaymakers, as well as some hidden gems well worth checking out!
Book your Last Minute Sun Holiday
Things are pretty tough once the Christmas season has wound down. The weather is still freezing cold, the days are still short and the sunshine is in short supply! Luckily you can find a loads of great last-minute sun holidays at this time of year, as well as in autumn. Prices will still be really reasonable compared to the peak summer months, so it will be a lot easier to book last minute hotels and flights.
The most popular sun holiday destinations
With so many beautiful countries to choose from, it can be pretty daunting trying to decide on where to go for your sun holiday, especially if it’s your first one. I’ve listed some popular choices amongst Irish holidaymakers below to help point you in the right direction should you be a little lost!
Without a doubt one of the most popular sun holiday destinations by far! Lovely climates and gorgeous stretches of sand are just a few of the many things to look forward to in this picturesque region along Portugal’s southern coast. Traditional towns villages like Cacela Velha, Sagres and Aljezur offer beautiful architecture and amazing restaurants serving freshly caught seafood. Breathtaking beaches such as Praia da Marinha and Praia do Tonel are shelted by the iconic golden cliffs that adorn many a postcard. And if it’s nightlife you’re looking for, Albufeira is the place to be.
The sheer diversity of the activities on offer and the very reasonable prices have cemented the Algarve’s title as a top sun destination for families and couples. The regional airport, Faro, is served by direct routes from Dublin, Cork, Knock, Shannon and Kerry, making it easily accessible from all over the country. The Canary Islands
If it’s sunshine you’re looking for, you just can’t go wrong with the Canaries. Famed for its year-round sunshine, this small archipelago off the western coast of Africa offers everything you could possibly want for a brilliant sun holiday no matter what season you go! Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the most popular of the bunch, served by direct flights from several Irish airports. Bustling resort towns such as Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje feature busy beaches, loads of restaurants and plenty of bars, but if you’re looking for a more authentic experience then you can always hire a car and explore the smaller villages further away from the crowds.
As well as endless sunbathing, there are plenty of activities to get stuck into. Fuerteventura’s constant winds make it a haven for surfers, while the soaring summit of Mount Teide on Tenerife draws many a hiker eager to climb the island’s highest point. Families will absolutely adore visitng Siam Park in Costa Adeje, one of the best water parks in all of Europe with loads of amazing rides for both young and old. Another beautiful island getaway, Malta may be tiny in size but it more than makes up for it with its rich history, gorgeous sunsets and amazing coastal scenery. In the summer time when temperatures are at their highest, be sure to bathing in the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Lagoon between the islands of Gozo and Malta, or bring the kids to Ramla Bay and Mellieha where the waters are nice and shallow! Party animals should head to Paceville where you’ll find a huge collection of bars and clubs open until the early hours – or you could head to Rabat for one of the awesome open-air clubs that are open during the summer months.
If you want a break from all of the sunbathing, you should take the opportunity to get to know some of Malta’s many historic areas. Valletta, the island capital, features stunning architecture with traditional balconies. Mdina is famed for the so-called “Silent City” – stepping through the city gates will transport you to another time and place. An absolute classic sun destination, Majorca has got it all. Its diversity means that it’s one of those places you can just keep visiting time and time again as you go off and explore different towns and regions, and the gorgeous climates are enough to put a smile on anyone’s face. Santa Ponsa and Magaluf may be infamous for the nightlife, but head to Deia and it’s a completely different story. We’re talking about historic villages with stone houses and gorgeous mountain vistas – a whole world apart really!
Families will love areas such as Palma Nova and Alcudia. The huge beaches here slope gently into the sea and the shallow waters makes it a safe spot for kids to splash about in the sea. Loads of hotels and resorts on the island are also geared towards families as well, many of which offering amenities such as kids’ clubs, playgrounds and childrens’ pools. The Greek Islands
Nowhere else in Europe quite invokes the idea of idyll and romance than the Greek Islands. From the iconic caldera views of Santorini to the family-friendly resorts in Crete, each island has its own distinct character that makes it a region you’ll want to keep coming back to time and time again. Crete is by far one of the most popular choices, but Corfu is also a big name when it comes to family holidays thanks to its large selection of activities and sandy beaches. Zakynthos and Mykonos are famed as being hubs for buzzing nightlife, while couples that want somewhere quieter to spark up some romance should head to Santorini, Naxos or Milos, to name but a few.
As well as Athens and Thessaloniki over on the Greek mainland, Dublin also enjoys direct connections to Crete, Corfu, Zakynthos and Kos (some of these routes being seasonal chartered flights). Winter sun holidays – the best destinations
With the sun already setting in the early afternoon and the bitter morning frosts, it’s easy to see why many of start to really crave some sun at this time of year! But while Ireland’s enduring freezing temperatures, some countries are off enjoying wonderfully mild – and even hot! – climates! For those of you craving some winter sun without having to endure a long flight, you could check out one of the best European winter sun destinations such as the Canary Islands, Madeira, Cyprus, Sicily and Malta, where you’ll enjoy temperatures of around 15 – 19 degrees Celcius. Sure, so it might not be warm enough for a swim – but it’s got us beat!
Those of you really looking to turn up the heat will be glad to know that you’ve plenty of options a little further afield. Popular destinations such as Mexico, Thailand, Dubai and Florida enjoy daily temperatures well into the 20 or even 30 degrees-mark. As soon as you step off the plane you’ll be forgetting it’s even winter at all!
Another advantage with winter sun holidays is that they’ll be a lot cheaper than travelling during the summer. You’ll be able to book inclusive holidays for a very reasonable price, and hotels and flights will be at their cheapest at this time of year.
