Sightseeing in Stockholm – art, history and nature

On a city break in Stockholm, one thing quickly becomes clear: Scandinavia’s biggest city has so much more to offer than just historical sights. The flair alone is unparalleled. Even if you’re in the vibrant city centre, you’re only a few steps away from enjoying the peaceful nature. You’re probably wondering which of the many sensations you should start with? I’m going to tell you now!

Djurgården – the Skansen open-air museum, the Vasa warship and more

An absolute must is Djurgården. The green peninsula is a real tourist magnet and is just as popular with the Swedes. Museums and untouched nature create an interesting mix for everyone. The most important museums here are the Vasa Museum, the Skansen open-air museum and Junibacken. The first is a maritime museum. You’ll be in awe of the striking Vasa warship and the other items from the past on display. Skansen was the first open-air museum in Sweden. It’s located in the west of the island and is guaranteed to amaze you. You’ll be taken back in time through centuries of Swedish history. Within the grounds, you’ll find portrayals of houses and farms from all over the country, in which time seems to have stood still. Here you can take a look at how people used to live. In the open-air museum’s zoo, you get to see brown bears, elk, eagle owls and many other typically Nordic animals. In the Junibacken museum, children’s eyes will light up. Here it’s all about the characters from Swedish children’s books, such as Pippi Longstocking, Ronia the Robber’s Daughter and the Moomins. The main focus is on the children’s book author Astrid Lindgren. Other attractions in Djurgården include Gröna Lund amusement park, Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde and Rosendal’s Palace. If you’re going on holiday to Stockholm in the summer, you can’t miss out on a trip to this island. You can have a lovely picnic here whilst enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

Stadsholmen – Gamla Stan, the oldest restaurant in Stockholm and more

If you want to experience the vibrant heart of the city, then you simply have to pay the island of Stadsholmen a visit. This is where Stockholm’s fascinating old town, Gamla Stan, is located. The history of Sweden’s capital began in the old town. The first settlement was built here, and Stockholm grew from this. Narrow streets, gabled houses, prominent buildings and idyllic squares lined with restaurants characterise this part of the city. Something you definitely have to see is Stockholm Palace. With hundreds of rooms, it ranks as one of the biggest palaces in the world. You can’t miss it! You can still feel the German influence throughout the city in Gamla Stan. This is largely down to The German Church. The church was built for the German community in the 14th century. Tyska Brinken (The German Slope) and Tyska Brunnsplan (German Well Square) also belong to the German heritage. Stortorget is considered to be one of the most important squares in the city. Many houses border the square, which is filled with people from all over the world in the summer. Other attractions include the Stockholm Cathedral and the Nobel Museum. If you get hungry then you can stop off for a bite to eat in Stockholm’s oldest restaurant. The Gyldene Freden is in the Guinness World Records book and is one of the attractions you just have to see on your trip to Stockholm.

You’ll need a whole day for both Djurgården and Stadsholmen. There’s so much to discover here and you won’t be able to fit it all in a short space of time. If you try to, you’ll just end up stressed and you won’t see everything properly. If you’ve seen everything there is to see on the two islands, another twelve await you. All of them will impress with their beautiful sights. Palaces and museums, nature reserves and parks – and all of that is surrounded by lots of water. Stockholm is beautiful and every year it attracts tourists from all over the world. And as you can see, there’s a reason for that!

Plan your Stockholm City Break

Stockholm hotels

If you have decided for a Stockholm City break then you can look forward to staying in one of the amazing lodgings the  hoteliers offer. The standard of hotels is quite high and you can get very good hostels in Stockholm, too. So do consider that. The price of a night in Stockholm is very high; a good hotel in the city centre costs around €100 per night, so do consider cheaper options, like an Airbnb, especially if you travel as a group. Have a look at my hotel finder to find a list of the most suitable Stockholm hotels.

Flight to Stockholm

That is pretty straight forward. Fly from Dublin to Stockholm Arlanda multiple times a day. The airlines that operate on these routes are SAS and Norwegian Airlines with direct flights. The prices are quite low and you can fly from as cheap as €90 return. Find your perfect flight to Stockholm on my flight finder.

Stockholm airport

From Arlanda airport it is very easy to get into the centre. There are mutliple ways. Follow the signs to the taxi stands, there you find the taxi official (yes he will be there), who organizes a taxi for you. It’s always a fixed fare of around €55-60 (640 krona) and it takes just 30 minutes to get to the centre. You can even choose what kind of taxi you like, whether it should be eco-friendly or not…  Then you have the Arlanda Express that is probably the fastest way to get into the centre from the airport. The train takes 20 minutes and departs right underneath the airport approximately every 15 mins. Order online and you only pay €19 instead of €3. There are also coaches that take you from the airport to the city centre. They can take up to 45 minutes but it also drives you into Sodermalm or other districts.

Transport in Stockholm

The transport in Stockholm really is superb. It is super punctual and you have a well-connecting web of trams, buses and metro working for you. The maps are very easy to read and you can get quite cheap 1, 3, or 7 day passes for the whole transport system.
