With more than 300 days of sun a year, Spain is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. The Balearic Islands also have a lot to do with that. But sunny Spain has plenty more to offer than just good weather and amazing beaches, making a holiday to Spain very appealing. In this article I will give you some useful information to help you out on your booking quest for Spain holidays.
Book a cheap holiday to Spain
If you want to book a cheap sun holiday then Spain is usually your go-to destination. The selection is simply gigantic, but it can be quite overwhelming finding great deals for the Spanish holiday. Basically the whole coastal region is a paradise for holiday-makers. But also a city break to Barcelona, Madrid or Grenada can save you quite a lot of money. Staying in an Airbnb could be a cheap alternative but there are also numerous beach hotels that you can book a room in for next to nothing. The standard of some of them might not be too great, but if you are looking for staying at the beach for the whole day anyway, then this is the way to go.
When should I book my Spain holiday?
Since the flight offer for Spain is enormous you can get great last minute Spain holiday deals, so on my blog you will often find packages that depart within the next 2 weeks. However, if you choose to travel to places like Majorca or the popular Costa Brava, then it makes sense to book three to four months in advance due to the nice hotels being booked out. This year Majorca was booked out to 97%. Mental! So put that towel on the lounger to make sure you get the best deal for your hotel room.
Package Holidays to Spain
If you like to have it all organised, hotel, flight and also airport transfers then I would recommend you booking packaged Spain holiday deals. Especially for a family holiday to Spain this will make things easy. Click&Go or TUI are great choices for cheap package holidays to Spain. Booking with these Online travel agencies will give you the peace of mind that everything is organised in just one booking and you don’t need to worry about any taxi bills or car rentals.
All Inclusive Holiday to Spain
Since Spain offers with wide variety of great hotels I would definitely recommend booking an all inclusive holiday. Just make sure to check the hotel’s reviews first. Sometimes the all inclusive buffets are really not worth paying extra. It then might make more sense to grab that extra money and treat yourselves to dinner in the local restaurants. With a bit of research you will find great places that offer authentic Spanish cuisine with tapas, sea food and paella. Yum!
If the hotel offers a good all inclusive service then I’d go for it. For the lazy ones: There is nothing better than lazing around all day knowing you never have to worry about where to get food :D And drinks are also included… Cheers!
Spain holidays from Ireland
With Dublin, Cork and Shannon airport being very good at offering direct flights to Spain you will always be able to get great offers for your Spain holiday. Dublin basically flies to any Spanish holiday destination you can think of. From Cork you can also fly to all the main Canary Islands as well as to the Balearic Islands. The pretty South of Spain is a bit more difficult to get to and you’d have to count in a stop over. Shannon airport offers a great service to Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife, however, to visit Gran Canaria you’d have to have a stop over. Barcelona and Madrid are unfortunately also excluded from the direct flights, but Alicante and Malaga are in, so visit the lovely Costa del Sol.
The best places for a holiday in Spain
Numerous bathing paradises await holidaymakers on the 4,000 kilometres of coastline. The Canaries are particularly popular, where a great climate prevails the whole year long. You can expect a wonderful mix of breathtaking nature, interesting culture and delicious cuisine. The countless holiday destinations in Spain are so diverse. Whether you’re looking for a quiet beach holiday by the sea or a more exciting city break in somewhere like Barcelona or Madrid, Spain has it all. The Spanish mountains are ideal for an active holiday – each place in Spain has its own charm. High- or low season – the country is perfect for everyone at any time of year. I’m going to show you the most popular destinations in Spain. Not only that, but I will also share the best offers for your next break to Spain.

Popular holiday destinations in Spain
There’s somewhere for everyone in Spain. The mainland is a real hit with its heavenly coastline and vibrant cities. With Majorca and Ibiza, the Balearics in the Mediterranean are also very popular. And the Canaries are perfect for escaping the cold British winter. Soak up the sun, indulge in the Spanish delicacies, visit impressive sights and explore countless hiking regions. I’m going to show you what the Spanish mainland and islands have to offer.
Popular places in mainland Spain
The Spanish mainland has so many wonderful cities to discover and fall in love with. They are all incredible:
Costa Brava – the rugged coast
One of the most beautiful areas of mainland Spain is the Costa Brava. It is the most northern strip of the Spanish coast and attracts sun-loving holidaymakers. The rugged, rocky landscape is characteristic of this part of the country. The picturesque bays and sandy beaches ensure a perfect holiday by the sea. The coast is approximately 220 kilometres long and has somewhere beautiful for everyone to relax on the sand. The beaches are typically flat and the sea is calm at many of the resorts, making the Costa Brava ideal for a family holiday. The numerous parks and hiking routes provide you with alternatives to the beach when you fancy a change. If you’re on the Costa Brava, you’re not far from the Pyrenees. This will only awaken your wanderlust even more. If you enjoy cycling, get on your bike and explore nature. Once you’ve taken in the mountainous landscape, plenty more sights await you in the central region of the Costa Brava. You just can’t miss out on seeing the architecture and charming places. Some of the sights include the longest fortress wall in Catalonia, ruins of roman monasteries and stunning old towns. The small fishing villages also mesmerise visitors with their maritime charm. Every holidaymaker will feel at home in this region of Spain. You’ll be able to find a suitable hotel in the popular resorts of this region with the deals that I regularly post on this page.
Barcelona – history, culture and heaps of fun
Barcelona is situated just 60 kilometres from the southern border of the Costa Brava and is an extremely popular destination for a city break. Spain’s second largest city will impress architecture and history lovers. The historic city centre of Barcelona entices visitors with Plaça del Rei (King’s Square), the Barcelona City History Museum and La Rambla. The latter is the main promenade in the city. Stroll along the street full of shops, restaurants and bars towards the port. This is where you’ll find the Maremagnum. The entertainment complex has nightclubs and bars as well as boutiques and shops. Partying, shopping and having fun are the main focus here. An absolute must in Barcelona is the Sagrada Familia. You simply can not miss out on visiting this church in Barcelona while on your holiday to Spain. Soak up the sun and go for a dip in the Mediterranean. The opportunity to combine a city break with a beach holiday in Barcelona is pretty unique. Find the perfect hotel here so that you can head off to discover this wonderful city on Spain’s east coast. Many of the offers include meals and cheap flights as well as the hotel. Nothing is stopping you from going on a fantastic city break here.
Costa Blanca – a beach paradise
Continue heading south along the east coast and you’ll find yourself in another popular holiday destination in Spain – Costa Blanca. The beaches in this coastal region are truly charming. The sunshine makes the sand here unusually white. Costa Blanca is a real beach paradise, which stretches for over 150 kilometres from Denia in the south to Pilar de la Horadada in the north. Les Deveses, La Almadrava, Les Bovetes and Les Marines are some great beaches. There are lots of nature parks and conservations to provide you with plenty more to do in the sun. Hiking, biking, jogging and so much more will ensure you can also have an active holiday in Costa Blanca. Enjoy your holiday to Spain!
Madrid – Spain’s biggest city
Another great destination for an unforgettable city trip is Madrid. The city is one of the largest in Europe, the capital of the country and situated right in the centre of Spain. Museum and culture lovers are especially drawn here. Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace and the theatre should definitely be on your to-do list. After you’ve seen all the main sights, lots of museums await you. Visit the Prado Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts. If you want to see as much of Madrid as possible in a short space of time, a city tour is probably worthwhile. On many of the tours, you can get off right by the sights, see the beautiful things up close and then hop on another bus to the next highlight. Eventually, you’ll be craving a tapas break. Refuel and treat yourself to the typical Spanish delicacies in a tavern in Madrid. Enjoy and be amazed – that’s the motto in Madrid!
Costa del Sol – the sunny coast
In the south of Spain, the wonderful Costa del Sol awaits you. This region experiences more than 300 days of sunshine a year. So it’s the perfect place to recharge your batteries and enjoy the seemingly endless beaches. Costa del Sol, also known as the sunny coast, is a popular destination for families, couples and solo travellers. Those who are into their sports will also feel right at home on the Costa del Sol. Relax on the beaches by the coast, and explore the hiking routes in the hinterland. If you are looking for a diverse holiday in Spain, then the Costa del Sol is the place to go.
Andalusia – flamenco, Sevilla and whales
Andalusia is a superb destination for a break packed with ‘Siesta and Fiesta’. The region is situated in the southernmost part of mainland Spain. If you’re looking for the birthplace of flamenco, look no further. The capital, Seville, and the diverse landscape are the main tourist attractions in the region. The tourists who come to Andalusia love the combination of sightseeing, hiking and relaxation. There are so many things to do and see in Seville. For example, visit the tomb of Christopher Columbus and ruins of the city wall. Interesting to know: The southernmost city of the region, Tarifa, is actually just 14 km away from Africa, connected by the Straits of Gibraltar. If you want to see whales and dolphins, take a boat trip across the straits. Andalusia is magical. That’s why I regularly look for great hotels here, where you can enjoy a wonderful stay, as well as plenty of other extras.
Costa de la Luz – the coast of light
There is another coastal gem hidden in the south of the country – Costa de la Luz. You can expect vast sandy beaches and untouched dunes. Costa de la Luz stretches right down to Tarifa and along to the Costa del Sol. The traditional little white villages are characteristic on the Coast of Light. You simply have to see them up close! If you’re a fan of watersports, the Costa de la Luz is the perfect destination for you. And there is accommodation to suit everyone here. I share the best hotel offers and package deals for Costa de la Luz daily on my blog.
The Spanish mainland boasts many other popular holiday destinations. Costa del Azahar, Costa Brava, the list goes on. However, a holiday to the Spanish Balearic and Canary islands should also be on your bucket list.
Spanish islands in the Mediterranean – the Balearic islands
Majorca is the place to be in the Balearics. Many people looking for a relaxing break choose this island for their holiday to Spain, and not without reason. Majorca has so much more to offer than just Magaluf. With over 550 kilometres of coastline, one thing is for sure: there is no end of beautiful places to relax on the beach. There seem to be an endless string of beaches around the island. Some of them are overflowing with tourists and others are much less busy so you can just enjoy the peace and quiet by the sea. The beaches and coves on the island are perfect for a beach holiday. If you can’t do without sports on your holiday and want to keep active, you’re also in the right place in Majorca. There are numerous hiking routes and bike trails, which will take you through the national parks on the island. Hardly any other island is as diverse as Majorca. If you want to avoid all the tourism, visit in the off season. In spring and autumn, you can still explore the blossoming splendour of the island under the warm rays of the sun. A holiday to Majorca is worth it at any time of year. Party animals should look for a hotel in the summer. You’ll meet so many like-minded people, just step into any of the bars in Magaluf and the Ballermann.
Ibiza is another much-loved destination in this group of islands in the Mediterranean. Both Ibiza and Formentera are parts of the Pityusic group of islands. Ibiza is ideal for everyone, regardless of your age or the type of holiday you’re looking for. Young people are especially drawn to Ibiza for its party scene. There are so many clubs, where you can meet celebrities from all over the world. Naturists will love the great selection of nudist beaches. But there are also numerous quieter places for the older generations and families to relax too. The centre of the island is where you’ll find lots of the main sights and the sightseeing fans will feel right at home. If you’re looking for a hotel in Ibiza or Majora, you’ll find the cheapest offers right here.
Spanish islands in the Atlantic – the Canary Islands
The Canaries is made up of seven islands just off the coast of Morocco in the middle of the Atlantic. Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura are the largest of the islands and the most popular. They all are of volcanic origin but could not be more different from one another, making them all worth a visit. Especially in the off season. As winter approaches in the UK, warm temperatures still prevail in the Canaries. Lie on the picturesque beaches and listen to the sound of the crashing waves.
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary islands and is home to a rather special highlight: Spain’s tallest mountain. El Pico del Teide – it’s certainly one reason for keen hikers to plan an adventure holiday to Tenerife. But beach lovers will also love it here. There is no end of beaches with both dark and light sand.
The second largest island is Fuerteventura. With a total of 150 km of beach, beach lovers and surfers will immediately fall in love. The beaches here rival those in the Caribbean – white, sandy beaches and turquoise sea await you. Nature reserves and great nightlife top the offer of activities available in Fuerteventura. Visit wonderful port cities and try the culinary delicacies made with fresh fish. If you’re looking for a relaxing holiday to Spain, you should consider Fuerteventura.
Gran Canaria is considered by many to be the party island of the Canaries. Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas and Las Palmas are top spots for an unforgettable night. Gran Canaria also has enchanting natural beauty with numerous beaches, oases and gorges. Nature lovers escape into another world here and will be well and truly blown away.
There is an endless choice of beautiful hotels in the Canaries. Take a look through the selection I have presented here, find one that suits you and look forward to an unforgettable holiday in Spain.
