Weather in Salou
Salou enjoys the lovely, mild climates you’d typically expect from coastal regions in Spain. July and August are the hottest months of the year with average daytime temperatures reaching up to 24°C – 25°C and water temperatures of 23°C – 24°C – not too hot for the little ones, yet still absolutely glorious! Of course the best weather coincides with peak season when the prices are at their highest, but if you are a little more flexible with your travel dates yet still want to enjoy some lovely weather, why not travel in the so-called “shoulder seasons”?
From the end of April the summer heat will slowly be making its return, so by May things will already be warming up nicely with average temperatures of 18°C. September and October also enjoy the same temperatures with averages of around 18°C – 21°C. The only downside about travelling in May, September or October is that there is a little bit more rain to contend with (40mm across the month), however it’s well worth looking into especially when you want to avoid the huge crowds.

The town has been awarded the “Family Tourism” away by the Catalan Government, so you know you’re in for a fantastic trip.
The premier theme park for families, Port Aventura is one of the most popular theme parks in all of Spain and offers a brilliant selection of rides and attractions specially geared towards families. Attractions are spread across different themed areas such as the Polynesia, Mexico and even Sesamoadventura – this Sesame Street-themed area is great for younger children especially. If you want to cool down from the sun you could even head to the Port Aventura Caribe Aquatic Park with loads of amazing water slides, lazy rivers and crazy pools.
It’s possible to buy tickets for the day or even book a package which comes with park admission and a stay at one of the official Port Aventura hotels included. There’s so much to do in these parks that it’s easy to see why people plan a whole holiday around it!

The best beaches for families in Salou & the Costa Dorada
The theme parks aren’t the only draw to Salou. The beaches here are perfect for young kids, as the sandy gently slopes into the sea and the waters are lovely and calm. The main beach in Salou, Platja Llevant, is an obvious choice of course but there are more fantastic options to go for as well. Platja Ponent offers over a kilometre of golden sands to chill out on and enjoys easy access from central Salou. I also love Playa Larga which is lovely and spacious and offers great conditions for activities such as windsurfing.
Just to the east of Salou is the resort town Cambrils, which also features some wicked beaches. Playa del Regueral is the most popular choice, while Playa de Vilafortuny even has a playground to keep the kids occupied. For a quieter beach that still provides useful amenities such as showers, Playa de Riumar is perfect choice. Surrounded by sand dunes and loads of great walking paths, Playa de Riumar lets you truly unwind, relax and enjoy a peaceful day out in the sun.
Aquopolis Costa Dorada
Another water park well worth checking out is the Aquopolis Costa Dorada, located by the beach in La Pineda. There are more attractions than you can shake a stick at with loads of water slides, crazy rides and even a wave pool. Plus there an area of the park dedicated exclusively to children under 12 years of age – what’s not to love!
Day tips to Tarragona
What was once a highly important port city in the Roman Empire is now a brilliant place to go for a day out with the kids. They’ll love Tarragona’s historic centre and the breathtaking Roman Amphitheatre, where gladiators used to duke it out in front of huge crowds of spectators. And of course there’s no shortage of family-friendly beaches in Tarragona either. With their gentle slopes and excellent amenities, Playa de Arrabassada and Playa de los Capellanes are great fun for both young and old.
Guru Tip: For an extra special day out, why not pay a visit to the Sirenas Mediterranean Academy? Dreams come to life as you learn how to swim like a mermaid – and once you’ve passed your classes you’ll even wear a proper mermaid tail!
