New York Weather

The state of New York weather is characterised by its distinct seasons – meaning cold winters and sultry summers! New York City experiences hot summers, where temperatures hit up to 30 degrees Celsius and you can really feel it in the capital! The city’s concrete buildings can really lock in the heat in late summer and riding the subway becomes a bit unbearable!

The “Indian Summer” is in full swing during autumn and you’ll get pleasantly warm and mild temperatures during this time. Fast forward to December and the temperatures fall to an average of 0 degrees. The best months for your New York holidays are between April, May, September and October when the weather is mild and pleasant.

Cheap flights to New York from Ireland

New York City is served by two international airports: John F Kennedy (JFK) Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport.

However, the cheapest flights to New York from Ireland are likely to leave you in Stewart Airport International Airport. SWF is located in Orange County, New York and is approximately 60 miles north of Manhattan. The journey via car or shuttle bus is one hours and a half. You can find flights here for as low as €202.

Before you fly: You may need a visa before to fly to New York. However, Irish citizens who hold a valid machine-readable passport and who have Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval may be eligible for the Visa Waiver Program. This lets you travel to the U.S. for tourism, business or transiting the U.S. for 90 days or less without obtaining a visa.

Iconic spots in New York City

Central Park

Central Park is arguably one of the most famous parks in the world. Known as “New York’s Green Lung”, this is a place for all seasons: leafy summers bring plenty of gigs, an outdoor film screenings, plays  and cultural events and more! Outdoor yoga, cycling, tennis or rollerblading: you’re never short of activities here.

The autumn brings brilliant colour changes that make a trip to New York City worthwhile. Greens leaves become vibrant hues of gold and orange, covering every bridge and path. During the winter, the park takes on an enchanting appearance. The bare-bone trees are covered in snow. There’s nothing more New York than ice skating on the Wollman Rink here!

The Statue of Liberty

A visit to the Statue of Liberty is a must-do for every city break to New York! Take the Staten Island ferry and see this iconic monument. Besides the fact that you’ll be able to see Lady Liberty up close, you’ll also have a great boat trip to look forward to too, complete with fantastic views of Manhattan’s skyscrapers.

Start your New York holiday with a fabulous view of the city. Head to the observation deck of the Rockefeller Centre rather than the Empire State Building. The “Top of the Rocks” is a pretty standard tourist spot but you’ll get the perfect Instagram-worthy snap against the city skyline.

Looking to stock up on some I Heart New York t-shirts and tote bags? What about splurging on a boutique find? The iconic fifth avenue is lined with luxury stores and high street brands. Even if you can’t afford anything, it’s pretty fun to wander through Bergdorf Goodman or Sachs.
