With Caribbean beaches, a huge city, volcanoes with snow-covered peaks and tropical rain forests, this country in North America is truly enchanting. Here, you can walk in the footsteps of the Mayan people and the Aztecs. Numerous ruin sites and temples will take you back in time. A holiday to Mexico belongs to the list of exotic trips that you simply have to go on at least once in your life. I’ll show you all the best places to spend your holiday, tell you what there is to discover and when the best time to go is.
The best time to go to Mexico
The diversity of this country is also reflected in the climate. The are various different climate zones, from subtropical to alpine. Generally speaking, lower-lying regions are warmer and more tropical and higher regions are much milder. The rainy season is between May and October. The other months are considered as the dry period, but it can also rain during this time. So, as the cold arrives in the UK – you could be enjoying the warm weather in Mexico. The popular peninsula Yucata, where Cancun is situated, is a year-round destination. There, the temperatures remain around 26°C throughout the year. In comparison, Mexico City is much milder. This is because the capital city is located at an altitude of more than 2,000 metres. The altitude influences the climate but it’s perfectly tolerable for Europeans. In winter, you can look forward to temperatures of up to 25°C, however the evenings can be a bit chilly. In April and June, tropical temperatures of up to 30°C prevail. Depending on which region of Mexico you want to travel to, the dry period is the most ideal time to visit this diverse country – so from October to April. However, if you like the rain, then you can also go on holiday in the other months.
Cancun – popular destinations for a beach holiday
When we think of Mexico, a dream destination naturally comes to mind: Cancun. The city is located on the Yucatan peninsula and attracts sun-hungry holiday makers year after year. Due to it’s coastal location, one thing is a must here: sunbathing on the picturesque beaches. With views of the blue sea, relaxing here is easy. The palm trees provide you with shade, this way you can spend the whole day on the beach. And it’s not just a paradise on land – the underwater world of Cancun casts a spell over divers and snorkelers. If you want to see wales up close, you’ll find them by Isla Mujeres island. Beneath the surface of the water you’ll find another highlight: the Underwater Museum. The artist Jason deCaires Taylor exhibits his life-size sculptures here. Every visitor is impressed by the view of “The Silent Evolution”. On the surface, you can go windsurfing or kayaking. Other than fun in and out of the water, there are also Xplor, Xcaret and Xel-Ha theme parks. A visit here is perfect for young and old. There are endless activities on offer here.
While on your break in the Yucatan peninsula, you simply must visit the many ruins. Chichen Itza is considered the most important amongst them all. The Mayan site is one of the sights you shouldn’t miss out on. El Castillo impresses its visitors. It is about 24 metres tall and the most well-known structure in Chichen Itza. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. Check out the other buildings with their special architecture: feast your eyes on Mesoamerican ball courts, porticoes, temples and lots more.
Playa del Carmen is situated about 50 kilometres away from Cancun. This city is another important tourist destination on the peninsula. You could take a day trip to Playa del Carmen or book a hotel there. Although it was previously a small fishing village, it is now, alongside Cancun, one of Yucatan’s tourist magnets. The beach of Playa del Carmen provides you with a real Caribbean feel – the combination of white sand and turquoise sea is provides the perfect setting for you to kick back and relax in the sun. You’ll also find another important Mayan ruin not far from the city of Carmen del Playa: Tulum.
There are plenty more cities around Cancun worth discovering. A diverse holiday region like no other awaits you.
Mexico City – discover the Mexican capital
Tasty delicacies, numerous sights and the friendliness of the Mexicans make the capital, Mexico City, really special. Along with the fact that the city is located 2,000 metres high up and surrounded by impressive mountains. Around 20 million people live in the valley. If you fancy a trip to Mexico, then you must see this metropolis. This is the heart and soul of the country. What can you do here? Eat typical Mexican food of course. Numerous bars and restaurants invite you to try their tortillas, enchiladas and tacos. If you like Mexican cuisine, you’ll love the spicy dishes. After tucking into all this, you’ll be raring to go and visit all the places and sights of the city. There are endless tourist sights here. The Zocalo is the central square of the city and is one of the biggest in the world. It’s lined with colonial buildings from the past, like the national palace, the town hall and the Catedral Metropolitana. The Baroque cathedral is the biggest in Mexico. The historic city centre lies between the Zocalo and Alameda Park. Art and architecture play a key role in the old town. Alameda Park is the public garden of the city, where many locals come to relax. Chapultepec Park is the green heart of the city – it’s the biggest park in the city. You’ll need a lot of time as there are so many sights to explore. Visit the anthropology museum, the castle, botanical gardens and the zoo. There’s so much to see!
If you want to dive into the history of Mexico, don’t miss out on Templo Mayor. The ruins of what was once the largest and most important temple of the Aztecs and their capital city, Tenochtitlan, remain here today. You can see them in the museum and be amazed. Moving towards the outskirts of the city, you’ll come across Xochimilco Park, which were the floating gardens of the Aztecs. You can discover the park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from a boat decorated with flowers. A trip here takes you to the quiet places of this bustling city.
Further outside of the Mexican capital, the ruin city of Teotihuacan is waiting to make your jaw drop and leave you wide-eyed. The ruin from the Mayan period is a must see on your trip to Mexico. The Pyramid of the Sun is the landmark of the city and makes for incredible holiday photos. The Pyramid of the Moon is equally impressive towering 46 metres above the ground. Those who haven’t seen these sights are missing out! If you packed sturdy shoes and like to hike, the surrounding mountains are ideal for a trip up to lofty heights. Mexico’s capital is a great travel destination to discover the culture, food and everything else that makes this country so special. Enjoy your trip!
Oaxaca – a gem southwest of Mexico City
This city in the same named state is unknown to many tourists. That’s just one reason why you’ve certainly got to see it. If you’re looking for somewhere less lively than the buzzing capital, then you’re in the right place here. The city is a hit with it’s beautiful location in a mountainous valley. Just like in Mexico City, you can also try delicious Mexican food and admire the architectural masterpieces. Churches and museums tell stories of the past. Stroll through pretty alleyways and take a short break and treat yourself to something from one of the lovely coffee shops. There are many places you could visit on the outskirts of city. 2,000 metres up high, there’s the former capital of the Zapotecs, Monte Alban. Here, you can admire the ruins and enjoy a view of the surrounding area. If you prefer to be on two wheels, then you can explore the terrain on a mountain bike. The Pueblos Mancomunados are the ideal location for a hike in the mountains. They are small villages of the Zapotecs, waiting to be discovered by you. Oaxaca has so much to offer for those who have the urge to explore.
