Popular holiday spots in the Republic of Malta
The Maltese archipelago is made up of three inhabited and four uninhabited islands. The populated islands, Malta, Gozo, and Comino, are popular holiday spots. I’m going to explain why the islands are such a popular destination and what you can expect when you go.
Malta – the main island with countless attractions
On the archipelago’s biggest island, holidaymakers can take advantage of the great variety of things to do. Malta is the main island of the Republic and has lovely places to swim and sunbathe. Although the island is generally rocky, there are divine sandy beaches along the coast. One of the most famous beaches is Golden Bay. It’s on the northwest coast of the island and has the perfect facilities for tourists. Water sports enthusiasts can water-ski here and go parasailing or paragliding. For some small refreshments, you can go to a bar or a restaurant on the beach. If you need a break from the sun, you can refuel in the shade of one of the souvenir shops and buy a trinket or two to take home with you. There is another amazing beach in the northwest. Mellieha Bay is the longest beach on the island and is definitely worth a visit. A great insider tip is the small Ghajn Tuffieha Bay. Here, it is quieter than other bathing spots on Malta. This may be because it’s tricky to get there. Before you and your children can swim and splash around in the shallow, calm sea, you first have to climb down lots of steps. The strain is totally worth it. There are plenty of other stretches of sand on the island – I think it’s best to visit them all!
Another highlight on the southwest coast is the Blue Grotto. This spectacular cave is part of a large cave system. You can only reach it by boat and only then if it’s good weather. You should definitely take a look at the imposing caves and the shimmering, sky-blue water. A trip here should definitely be on your list of places to visit when you’re in Malta.
As a change from the beach, you can to visit Valletta, the capital city of Malta. The old fortress city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most important landmarks on Malta. Valletta is on the east coast and is home to countless tourist attractions. The Grandmaster’s Palace is the seat of the Republic’s government. The facade of St. John’s Co-Cathedral is quite plain, but the inside is breathtakingly ornate. The many other churches, sacred buildings, grandiose palaces and fortresses in Valletta are also fascinating. You can find out more about the historic character of the city in one of the many museums. Because of its history and beauty, a trip to Valletta is definitely a must on your holiday.
Mdina, Malta’s oldest city, is in the heart of the island. It used to be the island’s capital and it is surrounded by fortified walls. Here, you can find the famous St. Paul’s Cathedral. The city has also been used as a location in episodes of Game of Thrones and in the film, Troy. The Middle Ages still seem to be alive here. History enthusiasts as well as those looking for a bit of peace will feel at ease here. Mdina is also known as the silent city, because there aren’t many people and no cars are allowed within the city’s walls.
If possible, history fans and amateur archaeologists should definitely go to the southwest of the island. There, you’ll find the Hagar Qim Temple Complex. It is situated on a plateau overlooking the Mediterranean and it is definitely worth visiting while you’re in Malta. Another important temple complex is in the southeast of the island. The Tarxien Temples date back to the Neolithic Age and are also worth a visit. You can quickly and easily get to the attractions of Tarxien and Mdina from Valletta.
Gozo – the diver’s paradise
The second-biggest inhabited island in the Republic of Malta lies to the northwest of the main island. Gozo is quite simply a diver’s paradise. Alternatively, you can discover the unique underwater world with a snorkel. Some of the most beautiful diving and snorkelling areas in the Mediterranean are here. There are many shipwrecks under the water’s surface, which make a dive here really special. If you want to try out wreck diving, there’s no better place to do it than Gozo. Gozo also has plenty of historic sites, including the Ggantija Temples and the Xaghra Stone Circle. In the west of Gozo, you’ll find a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. Dwejra attracts tourists from across the whole world. Here, you can find Fungus Rock, and salt flats, as well as an inland sea and much, much more. Dwejra is the main highlight on Gozo but you can enjoy nature, and peace and quiet across the whole island. Gozo provides the perfect conditions for a relaxing holiday in Malta. Don’t forget to try the island’s typical dishes like Gbejna (goat’s cheese) and fresh fish, which is available in every corner of Gozo. The island and its amazing atmosphere will enchant you. I can guarantee that you’ll never forget a holiday here!
Comino – diver’s paradise no. 2
The smallest populated Maltese island is Comino. It is found between Gozo and Malta and is only 3 square kilometres in size. Here, inhabited means one hotel! The island is free from cars so no emissions overpower the scent of the fresh thyme. If you want to experience rest and relaxation in its purest form, come to Comino! Diver’s shouldn’t give the island a miss either. The Blue Lagoon is the main highlight here. It is the best spot for diving and snorkelling in Malta. The turquoise water glistens on the white sand. Paradise reigns here. If you want to go on an underwater adventure, you can swim through the many caves on a diving course. Caves are found along the whole of the small island’s steep coastline. Another important landmark to visit is St. Mary’s Tower. There is an amazing view of the Blue Lagoon and other parts of the island from the 70-metre tower. St. Mary’s Battery is also worth seeing. You can visit the defences and take a look at four historic canons. You can learn a lot about Malta’s past here. The island is a real hiker’s paradise, especially in spring. The temperatures aren’t too hot and there are adventure paths along the coast. If you book a hotel on one of the other Maltese islands, you can go on a day trip to Comino. Ferries travel regularly from Malta and Gozo to their smaller neighbour.
By the way, do you know which language the residents of the Republic speak? It’s Maltese but English is also spoken quite frequently because Malta was part of the British Empire. So, if you don’t have time to learn Maltese before your holiday to Malta, speaking English is not a problem!
If you want to enjoy an excellent beach holiday, the best times to travel to Malta are the months of July, August, September and October.
