How to get from Madrid Airport to City Centre?Weekend in Madrid | Madrid Tourist Travel Pass

For a trip to Madrid, I would strongly advise when booking to mix and match! That means I wouldn’t avail of packaged deals, where transfer is included and such because it’s simply not necessary. From Madrid airport it is quite easy to get to the centre so your best bet is to start with looking for a cheap flight and then add your hotel. If you think the hotel prices are super high, check if there is a special event or a trade fair going on. This can increase prices and it might make sense to change your dates then.

Madrid Accommodation

For a good deal for accommodation in Madrid you can choose between hotels and private accommodation. For hotels and hostels I can recommend using Trivago or, and Airbnb for the more authentic experience. So whenever I find a good deal for accommodation I try pairing it up with a cheap flight. So keep checking this page to check for Madrid deals.

Where to stay in Madrid?

Now, it’s all about location! Especially for a city trip, when you don’t have that much time it is important to know where you want to stay so that you don’t lose too much time getting from “home” to the sights.

If you like to stay central then make sure to select Huertas or Cortes as your district. You will be close to Plaza Mayor and the major sights of Madrid. A good nightlife is also at your doorstep. Even more focused on nightlife is Chueca, the gay neighbourhood. There you will find loads of restaurants, shops, and bars that will keep you entertained throughout the night. For a more multi-cultural experience choose Lavapiés, a great one if you’re into food from all over the world and quirky shops. It is less crowded of tourists so you will get a more authentic experience of the working-class and multi-cultural side of Madrid. If you have some money left to spend you can also treat yourself to a stay at Salamanca, the high-end of Madrid with expensive shops and pricey restaurants. It is however a tiny bit outside the centre.

Madrid Flights

The great thing about visiting Madrid is that flights are usually extremely cheap. You can fly direct from Dublin or Cork, considerably cheaper being flights from Dublin. If you get a good flights deal you can even fly return to Madrid for only €50. From Cork you have to pay almost 4 times as much if you’re unlucky, so it might make sense to drive the way to Dublin (sorry… for the ones who aren’t living there). The flight takes only 2 1/2 hours and makes a great Madrid city break.

How to get from Madrid Airport to City Centre?

By taxi

The good news is there is a fixed fare since 2014 that guarantees tourists to get from Madrid Barajas Airport to the city centre for €30. For anywhere else, depending on where you have your hotel it might cost you more or less. But this gives you a good idea and doesn’t leave you thinking, did I get ripped of or not by the driver.

By bus

When it is too early for the metro and you have to catch that red-eye flight, then I’d recommend taking the airport express bus. From Terminal 1, 2 and 4 (or vice versa Atocha train station) the bus leaves every 15 minutes and take 40 minutes to get you to the airport. Costs just a fiver!

By metro

To get to the city centre from the airport by Madrid’s metro system, get on line 8. This one takes you to Nuevos Ministerios from where tou can change into several other metro lines. The journey takes only 15 mins and costs around €4.50

Weekend in Madrid

Because the flight times to Madrid are so convenient Madrid makes the perfect destination for a weekend break. Even the flights aren’t that much more expensive when you want to fly after work on a Friday and come back on a Sunday night. However, the hotel prices are slightly increased then. So check this page though for weekend trips to Madrid, you will see it in the heading of the deal if the trip is going over a weekend.

Madrid Tourist Travel Pass

If you’re into sightseeing and plan on visiting most of the major tourist attractions by public transport then it makes sense to purchase the Madrid Tourist Travel Pass. You get them for a different number of days. I would recommend buying the ticket for zone A. This should be enough if you plan to stay in Madrid and it even includes the airport journey (not the express shuttle bus though). As an example, for 3 days this pass costs €18.40. Kids under 12 years travel for half the price and under 4s of course travel for free :)

A Madrid city break is a great way of spending a couple of days off in a gorgeous city with delicious food, fantastic wine, culture, lifestyle, and history. Whether you’re into sightseeing, nightlife or just love sitting in a cafe for hours and watch the world go by with a bottle of Cava, you can do it all in Madrid!
