Volcanic, verdant Madeira is known as the “Island of Eternal Spring” for its year-round mild climate. Beyond being the birthplace to the most famous footballer alive, this luscious island is home to an exotic array of plants and flowers. Whether you want to lounge on the beach or delve into the peaks and valleys of this gorgeous retreat, a Madeira holiday is the perfect way to connect with nature.
Flights from Ireland to Madeira
Madeira has one airport in Funchal, recently christened Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo (FNC). Known as the one of the world’s “most challenging airports”, FNC’s single terminal is surrounded by high mountains and the ocean so landing is tricky.
It’s not possible to fly directly from the Republic of Ireland to Madeira (you’ll more than likely have a stopover in Portugal), but Belfast does have charted flights. And they’re direct! So if you’re unsure you want to have to put up with a stopover along the way, flying from Belfast is a very nifty way of getting around this.
Climate in Madeira
Madeira’s two peak seasons occur during the Christmas period and the school summer holidays. You’ll see the most rain during the winter months, particularly in the north, but Funchal manages to stay drier. I recommend travelling here just before summer when the weather is warm but the tourist influx hasn’t hit yet!
Famous sights in Madeira
Famous for being the birthplace of Cristiano Ronaldo, this autonomous archipelago off the coast of Portugal offers plenty for holidaymakers interested in beaches and hiking trails.
Madeira’s modern, yet classic capital city is the perfect place to begin your holiday. You’d be wise to check out the historic centre with plenty of gorgeous architecture to admire. Visit the Sacred Art Museum in the beautiful Episcopal Palace. Visit Funchal’s beautiful gardens, converse with locals and dine on some delectable seafood.
Just 4km from the city are the famed Jardim Botanico, the rich and diverse gardens that host a variety of flower species. Grab a cable car to get here!
Go on a Levada walk that will take you around the island’s man-made channels and you’ll be rewarded with even more stunning natural beauty. Walk past the Risco Waterfall or follow the path along the beautiful São Jorge Valley. You won’t regret it!
Give your calves a run for their money with a hike up the Pico Ruivo! At 1862 metres, it’s highest peak in Portugal. It’ll take about 1 hour and a half to complete an easy route, but you will be thanked for your efforts with stunning panoramas.
One of Madeira best beaches can be found west of Funchal. Made up of basalt stones and with a nearby volcanic cave, this is a great little beach that’s calmer than other ones on the island. You’ll truly feel at peace here.
