The best places to stay in Lanzarote
Never been to the island before? Not sure where to stay in Lanzarote? Here’s a quick overview of the three most popular resorts in Lanzarote.
Puerto del Carmen
As the busiest resort in Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen is the perfect choice for anyone who wants everything at hand. Fantastic beaches, loads of restaurants and plenty of bars – Puerto del Carmen has it all! Since the town is just a short drive away from Arrecife Airport it’s super convenient for families who don’t want to put up with a longer transfer time to their accommodation. For a romantic evening, be sure to sit down with a drink in the charming La Tiñosa area. You’ll be able to enjoy views of the small, peaceful bay as the fishing boats do their thing. Fancy a bit more action? In Puerto del Carmen you’ll also find the island’s most lively nightspots here with Irish pubs, cocktail bars and clubs.
Another major tourist resort, Playa Blanca is another top choice for visitors to Lanzarote. The white-washed architecture and rocky bays are views you’ll typically associate with Lanzarote. The atmosphere is nice and laid-back, so for the ultimate chilled-out experience, I recommend staying in one of the many private villas or apartments. The resort is also perfectly situated for exploring some of the top attractions of Lanzarote, including the Green Lagoon and Timanfaya National Park.
By the eastern shores of Lanzarote is the popular town of Costa Teguise. The wide variety of activities on offer makes is an attractive choice for both couples and families, with spacious sandy beaches that are ideally suited for young children. Or you could take the kids up to the Aquapark Costa Teguise for a fun day out! For the adults, there’s also a wide selection of water sports such as windsurfing and even a golf club with an 18-hole course and gorgeous views of the sea!
Things to do in Lanzarote
Plan some jam-packed days out with a quick overview of top attractions and things to do in Lanzarote.
Timanfaya National Park
This island is known across the world for its dramatic topography. You’ll find a lava-strewn landscape and numerous volcanoes. The best place to experience Lanzarote’s moon-like landscape is in Timanfaya National Park. There, you’ll come face to face with the island’s awe-inspiring active volcanoes and lava fields.
It’s still hot under the solidified lava rocks, and you can ever grill meat using heat from the earth. What an experience! For a truly unique experience, you can explore the famous volcanoes via on camelback at Timanfaya.
The Green Lagoon is another phenomenal attraction. The crater lake is in the middle of the black sands of the beautiful El Golfo coast. The water is a luminous green due to its high algae content. This martian-like wonder looks like it lept from the pages of Ray Bradbury novel!
Many flock to southern Lanzarote’s heavenly beaches like the Playas Papagayo. Situated on the headland underneath the Ajaches Mountains, this golden, sandy beach is separated by huge rocks. This will be one of the highlights of your Lanzarote holiday. You can wander from beach to beach, swim in the crystal clear water and discover more lava rocks in between.
Jameos del Agua
The Jameos del Agua are a true little oasis! If you fancy a chilled afternoon out, be sure to check out this gorgeous landmark masterminded by artist Cesar Manrique. He turned the remains of a volcanic cave formation into a network of beautiful caves and gardens lined with crystal-clear ponds. Be sure to sit down for a lovely meal at the restaurant there – and keep your eyes peeled for any special events being hosted there!
