The Mediterranean appeals to people because of its many beautiful islands. However, many tourists are only drawn to one for their break, namely the Greek island of Kos. Holidaymakers generally prefer to go to Kos on holiday rather than other Mediterranean islands. Why? Because it’s beautiful and rich in variety. Here, you can spend time on the beach and at the same time retrace Greece’s history. The beaches are some of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. The weather in spring is pleasant enough to relax on the fine sand or splash around in the clear water. But, there is much more to the landscape than this. There is an imposing mountain in the heart of the island. And if the beautiful landscapes weren’t enough, there are also many opportunities for cultural outings thanks to the numerous historical sights. During your holiday on Kos, you’ll never get bored. You can find out where on the island is best for your break now. I’m going to introduce you to the most beautiful towns and their extra-special features.

Popular places on Kos and their highlights

The whole island is full of popular destinations for a beach holiday. Because of its location in the eastern Aegean, the climate is ideal, as there are many hours of sun. There are few rainy days from May to October and you can enjoy gloriously warm temperatures well into autumn. Nearly every holiday resort on the island is on the coast so you never have to go far to find a dreamy beach. I am going to show you the individual places on Kos and their best features. You’ll be truly inspired: head off for the holiday of your dreams on Kos.

Kos Town – the island’s capital

The island’s tourist centre is Kos Town. The capital and biggest town on the Greek island is on the east coast. If you want to go on an exciting trip through Greece’s history, Kos Town is right for you. Countless ruins, archaeological sites, and memorials are witnesses to a past time. Culture lovers’ and historians’ hearts soar. Starting with the ruins of the old Roman Odeon, archaeologists will also love Kos. Another highlight in Kos Town are the ruins of the Sanctuary of Asclepios. It is the oldest example of a healing ground and by far the most important site on Kos. A visit to the grounds and temple is a must on your holiday on Kos. A lovely side effect of the visit is a stunning view over the sea. In the Archaeological Museum, you can see many more discoveries from the past and learn a lot about Greek Antiquity. A special type of memorial is the Tree of Hippocrates. It is said that the doctor and most famous Koan used to teach under it. The Castle of Netrazia dates back to the 14th century when the Knights of the Order of St. John ruled the island. This also belongs on your list of sights to visit during your holiday. You shouldn’t miss the Casa Romana or the Ancient Agora either.

You can feel the Mediterranean atmosphere in Kos Marina. Here, you can saunter along, take a look at the sailing boats and enjoy the wonderful sea air. If you want to shop and discover Greek cuisine, then it’s worth a wander to the Old Town. Churches, mosques, and romantic lanes enchant your eyes and mind. Meals in a traditional taverna top off the Greek feeling and treat your taste buds to culinary delights. After all this excitement, it’s time for a visit to the beach. There are beaches near the port. Mainly tourists come here. It is not lacking in water sports or entertainment. Even if you haven’t booked a hotel in Kos Town, you should definitely visit the island’s capital during your holiday in Greece. From here, you can also take a day trip to Bodrum. Turkey is only a few kilometres from Kos and it longs for your visit. In this way, you can see two beautiful countries on the same trip.

Kardamena – beach paradise in the south

The tranquil fishing town of Kardamena is on the south coast of Kos. It is a popular holiday destination because of its dreamy beaches. Many properties on the beach have their own private section where you can enjoy the sun, sea and sand in peace. If you actually don’t want to stretch out in the sun, you can have a go at a variety of water sports. Wear yourself out water-skiing or jet skiing. The underwater world is also worth exploring. You can find lots of diving schools, which kit you out and take you on discovery tours under the water. If you want to see more of the fascinating landscape, you have to head for the plateau behind the beach. Here, you can enjoy a magnificent view over Kardamena and other parts of the island. You should also visit the ruins of Antimachia Castle. The fortress dates back to the Middle Ages and takes you back in time. In the summer, the Alasarnia Festival is a particular highlight. There are lots of events like concerts, stage performances, and traditional dances as well as art exhibitions.

If you need a relaxing break, take a day trip to the Embros Thermae. Heated thermal water springs out of the mountain and fills a natural pool. It benefits both your mind and body. Likewise, it’s definitely worth an outing to the mountain village of Zia. You definitely shouldn’t miss the sunsets here. The view is gorgeous. The Dikeos Mountains, in the south of the island, are a paradise for ramblers. The highest peak towers more than 800 metres over the island. Forests and typical Greek villages with few inhabitants create a wonderful atmosphere. The mountains offer an ideal location for a day trip so you can add some variety to your beach holiday. The abandoned village of Paleo Pili near Zia adds a spooky atmosphere to your wanderings. The castle and its ruins dominate the town. If you’re still after sea and sand, then head for Lagada Beach. In the south of Kos, it is one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. The water is turquoise blue and crystal-clear. It is a real gem among the Mediterranean’s beaches.

If you decide to go on holiday in Kardamena, you can look forward to peace and relaxation as well as lots of opportunities for day trips.

Kefalos – the island’s former capital

Another popular holiday destination is on the west coast of Kos. Kefalos was the first capital of Kos, but today it’s appealing as a picturesque town with an original atmosphere. If you want a quiet time on the Greek island of Kos, you’ll find it in Kefalos. The town is on a hill, which means that there are wonderful views. Nearby there are great places for swimming as well as different possibilities for day trips in the surrounding area. Narrow lanes, beautiful dunes and a charming harbour characterise the town. Paradise Beach offers ideal conditions for sunbathing, swimming and keeping active. It is equipped with parasols, loungers and everything else you could possibly need for a day on the beach. If you can’t get enough of sun, sea and sand, I’d recommend Limnionas Beach. Here, there is a small bay with a pretty harbour. An important landmark on your holiday in Kefalos is the Windmill of Papavasilis. It stands imposingly over the town on a cliff. You definitely shouldn’t miss a visit here. If you want to combine relaxing with day trips, you can find lots of places in the surroundings. Visit Kamari or the small island of Kastri, for example.

Mastichari – perfect for rest and relaxation

The fishing village of Mastichari is in the north of Kos. It is the right place on this Greek island for a quiet break by the sea. This town has two gorgeous beaches. One is big and spacious, whereas the other is smaller and narrower. But they do have one thing in common – you can enjoy the sun and let your mind wander. Mainly families come to Mastichari because it’s peaceful. Here, there is a harbour, where ships leave for Kalymnos. Kalymnos is a hikers’ paradise. The rocky landscape kindles your wanderlust. A day trip here allows you to combine lying on the beach, with sporty activities. Alternatively, you can travel to the capital. The attractions here will satisfy your cultural hunger.

Marmari – a beach, water sports, and fine cuisine

The beach resort of Marmari is northeast of Mastichari. The main attraction here is definitely the beach. It is particularly good for families and also all other holidaymakers because of the flat, even sand and the calm water. There is also a wide range of water sports. You can learn windsurfing and kitesurfing in surf schools. When you’re ready, you can rent out equipment and throw yourself into the waves. You can also go on sailing trips. If you want to relax, you can treat yourself to culinary delights in a taverna or a bar in the town. You can also wander through the shops and take a look at the small church in Marmari. If you want to experience a bit of the countryside, then the Dikeos Mountains aren’t far away. A day trip with your hiking boots is worthwhile on your holiday in Marmari. You’ll never get bored here.

Tigaki – the island’s picturesque highlight

A typically Greek holiday town is Tigaki. The scenery here is unique. There is a long beach with white sand in a luscious green valley. It’s a beach paradise for sun worshippers. There are more than enough places for beach-hungry holidaymakers over the ten kilometres. It is clean, the water is crystal-clear, and the beach graudally slopes down into the sea, which is perfect for families with children. Water sports fans can also run riot in and on the water. There is a Salt Lake near the beach. In the summer months, it is normally dried up, but it is still a lovely place for a trip. In Tigaki, you can find many traditional tavernas where fresh fish and other Greek delicacies are served. Bars and clubs tempt you in for a great night of partying. To add cultural balance to your holiday in Tigaki, you can also go on an excursion to the island’s capital. Kos Town is only eleven kilometres away. You can take the bus and have a look at the historical sights there.

The best travel times for a Greek holiday on Kos are between the months of May and October.
