The Czech Republic – popular destinations for your holiday

Diverse. That’s how I would describe the Czech Republic. There are many regions for you to visit depending on what you want to get out of your holiday to the Czech Republic. You’ll find wellness and a whole load of relaxation in the world famous spas. Numerous sights are waiting to be discovered in the big cities. The castles and fortresses that are dotted all over the country attract history and culture lovers. Nature lovers will also be in heaven here. The nature in the national parks appears to be untouched. The mountain ranges offer numerous hiking trails for active holiday makers. Who would have thought the Czech Republic to be so diverse? Find out below what each region has to offer.

Flights to Czech Republic

There is actually only one airport that is interesting to us tourists to get to Czech Republic. That is of course Prague airport. Brno or Ostrava are only regional airport and not catered to by Irish airports. We are lucky, flying to Prague is super cheap for us since Ryanair flies there directly on a regular basis, as does Aer Lingus.

Prague – the Czech capital and vibrant metropolis

The first place that generally comes to mind when you think of a holiday to the Czech Republic is the golden city of Prague. The capital of the Czech Republic is an ideal destination for city break fans. Here, it’s just one highlight after the next and the many attractions that are worth seeing are lined up alongside one another. Architecture, culture and history come together in a wonderful way. The centre of Prague isn’t listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for nothing. The town hall, with its astronomical clock, Charles Bridge, the old town, as well as Prague Castle rank among the most famous sights. The Czech Republic is regarded as the country with the highest concentration of attractions, so that’s far from all the sights. Other sensations, for example, include the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Vitus, Wenceslas Square, The Church of Saint Nicholas and the Old Jewish Cemetery. Anyone who thinks they can now take a breath are mistaken. A boat trip along the Vltava is an absolute must on your Czech Republic holiday in Prague. You’ve also got to make some time for a bit of shopping. The city is full of expensive boutiques and affordable fashion shops. Meander through the picturesque streets and discover all the beautiful corners of the city. There are museums, theatres and historical buildings everywhere. As a rustic refreshment I would recommend some Prague ham with sauerkraut and schupfnudel. Sit yourself down in a Czech restaurant and treat yourself to some delicious food. Those who want to relax during their city break can treat themselves to a bath in the beer spa. An experience you won’t forget.

As Prague is one of the most popular destinations in Europe, there is a diverse range of hotels. From upscale luxury hotels to inexpensive boat hotels. There’s accommodation to suit everyone’s taste. Whether it be in a central location or outside of the city. You have the choice of a wide range of hotels.

Karlovy Vary – the world famous spa town

Spa fans will have heard of it: the famous Karlovy Vary, also known as Carlsbad. Here, everyone can truly relax. From regular relaxation seekers to VIPs from all over the world. The biggest spa town in the Czech Republic is located in the west of the country. The colonnades are characteristic of the spa town. In the historical buildings of the spa architecture you will find mineral springs. The natural mineral sources take care of the well-being of the body and mind. You can enjoy a whole host of water therapies. The spa town has wonderful spa facilities and hotels at its disposal. Here, you can properly enjoy yourself and relax. The choice of Czech hotels in Carlsbad is huge. You could a take time-out in one of the many luxury hotels. Holiday makers with a smaller budget can also find perfect accommodation in Karlovy Vary.

If you fancy a bit of variety, there is an abundance of sights for you to see in addition to all the relaxation and recovery. If you want to enjoy breathtaking views, then it’s worth visiting the Diana Observation Tower and the Hirschsprung viewing pavilion. Noteworthy churches include the Mary Magdalene Church and the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Peter and Paul. The butterfly house in Karlovy Vary is a highlight for animal lovers. Here, you can take a look at butterflies from all over of the world. If you’ve got plenty of time whilst your holiday in the Czech Republic, you could watch a play at the city theatre and take a trip to the Jan Becher Museum. Here, you’ll learn all about the world famous Kräuterlikör Becherovka.

By the way, the international film festival takes place every year in Karlovy Vary!

Mariánské Lázne – another popular spa town

Mariánské Lázne, along with Karlovy Vary and Františkovy Lázne, is part of the West Bohemian spa triangle. Therefore, the town is an absolute must for spa fans. Just like in Karlovy Vary, there are many natural mineral sources and colonnades here. Kings and other nobles have come here, relaxed and made use of the different spas. The mineral springs help prevent various illnesses and take care of your well-being. Mariánské Lázne has numerous hotels with spas and other wellness facilities at its disposal.

Keeping in line with taking care of yourself, if you fancy a bit of exercise, take a trip to the neighbouring Kaiserwald. The massive nature conservation area with its delightful landscape is waiting for you. Here, you can hike and cycle until your heart’s content. The different nature trails give you a sense of the power of the natural resources. For example, you can learn about how and why peatbogs are used and which illnesses they can fight against.

As a contrast to the nature conservation area, you can take a look at the sights of Mariánské Lázne. You’ve got to see the Singing Fountain at spa colonnades, The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Church and the Bohemian Miniature Park.

Slovakia – a trip to the Czech Republic’s neighbour

If you’re on holiday in the Czech Republic, it’s worth considering a trip to Slovakia. Except for in Bratislava and the Tatra mountains, not many tourists are drawn to the country neighbouring the Czech Republic. That’s exactly why a trip here is so interesting. Far away from the masses of tourists, discover this fascinating country. Amongst the many medieval castles there is one which you just have to see: Spiš Castle. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Slovakia, nature lovers will be right at home as there are nine national parks and many nature conservation areas. Make your way to the mountains and enjoy the untouched nature. On your tour of Slovakia, you could discover the many caves. Perfect for the part time speleologists among you!
