Popular holiday destinations for a holiday in Bulgaria
The eastern European country has a long coastline along the Black Sea. It is a whopping 400 kilometres long. This means one thing is certain – in Bulgaria, there are countless coastal resorts for a relaxing beach holiday. There are great conditions for a family holiday. Golden Sands, as well as Sunny Beach, are in the most popular holiday region for a break with the whole family. But, this isn’t all – you can look forward to a lot more than this on your holiday in Bulgaria! If you’re looking for a special kind of city trip, come to Sofia or Varna. There are lots of sights and an interesting culture programme to look forward to. I’m going to tell you about some popular holiday destinations in Bulgaria so you can find out what to see and experience there. I’m also going to reveal which places are best for a party holiday and where you can have an amazing shopping experience.
Sofia – a capital of contrasts
Sofia, in the west of the country, is one of Europe’s oldest cities. It is also the capital of Bulgaria and full of contrasts and contradictions. As soon as you arrive, you can feel the prefab character and former Eastern Bloc charm. If you go further into the middle of Sofia, you’ll find modern buildings. Various historical buildings stand in contrast to these. In other parts of the city, there is street art and graffiti. You can either eat in fast food joints or head off on a culinary journey with traditional Bulgarian dishes. It’s cheap, except for in the posh, upmarket boutiques where you can buy designer goods. Although prefabs dominate Sofia’s cityscape, there are lots of green parks and areas where you can breathe. The urban city flair interrupts the mountain range, which is just outside the city gates.
Highlights and sights in Sofia
Let’s begin with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which is the symbol of Sofia. The tower is 53 metres high. The interior is also ostentatious. It has room for 10,000 people inside. If you stand in front of the cathedral, it’s quite difficult to fit the whole building in one photo. Let yourself be amazed and take your first souvenir photo of Sofia. When you’re in the Bulgarian capital, you have to see its oldest building, The Rotunda of St. George. Another thing to tick off your sightseeing list is the Ivan Vasov National Theatre. Lots of city tours start here. It faces the City Garden. Here, you can catch your breath before heading off to the next attraction. This could be the centre of alternative art and culture. You can’t see enough street art on Tsar Ivan Shishman Street. There are also art shops and indie bars with an easy-going atmosphere. In the centre of the city, there is another church, which is worth seeing. St Nedelya Church is right next to the Largo and has been restored and rebuilt several times. Inside, you can take a look at the beautiful murals on the walls. The oldest mosque in Europe is also in the centre of Sofia. With luck, you’ll be able to see the inside of the Banya Bashi Mosque between prayers.
Another attraction is Vitosha Boulevard. It is Sofia’s main shopping street and is in the middle of the town centre. It is home to luxury boutiques, fashion outlets, and all sorts of other shops. The street is named after Vitosha Mountain, which is another of the city’s highlights. In the winter, you can ski and snowboard here. At other times of the year, there are perfect conditions for hiking and mountain biking. This means that you can combine your city break with an active holiday. The city has a lot on offer and it will capture your heart. It’s a hidden gem among European city breaks. The best thing is that it’s not overflowing with tourists like many other cities. I can definitely say that it’s worth visiting the city for a few days. Have a look for yourself before anyone else catches on to this Bulgarian jewel.
Varna – a journey of discovery in the port town
Varna, Bulgaria’s third-biggest city, is in the east of the country on the Black Sea. Both beach lovers and fans of city breaks love this popular destination. Families, couples, friends, and singles all enjoy the beach, which gently slopes into the Black Sea, as well as the sights in the city. One of the most important and imposing buildings is the Mother of God Cathedral. It is the symbol of the city and it enchants visitors with its stunning murals, woodwork, and its golden cupola. Golden cupolas are typical for Bulgaria. You can find them across the whole country. The countless museums in Varna are not to be missed either. Take a trip back in time at the Archaeological Museum, where there are finds from Antiquity and the Middle Ages. You should also visit the Roman Thermae in the centre of the city. Did you know that Varna is home to the second-biggest port in Bulgaria? You shouldn’t skip it on your holiday in Bulgaria. If you want to explore outside the city, take a trip to the Aladzha Cave Monastery. It’s hewn into the side of a cliff in the forest. In the north, the city borders the Golden Sands holiday region, which is our next on our list of popular holiday destinations.
Golden Sands – beach paradise on the Black Sea
Golden Sands refers to the region as well as the beach. The name says it all. The fine sand on the beach glitters in gorgeous gold. The resort is around 20 kilometres east of Varna on the Black Sea. You can take a day trip there if you’ve booked a hotel in Golden Sands. The holiday region is a tourist magnet. The beach is 3.5 kilometres long and is up to 100 metres wide in some places. It’s ideal for an amazing holiday with your children. The water is calm and the beach runs gradually into the sea. There are also sports on offer. You can go surfing, sailing and banana boating, as well as many other things in, under, on or around the water. If you need a guarantee of sunshine and perfect bathing temperatures, the best travel time to Golden Sands is between May and September. In the summer months, hotly anticipated parties and events take place, which attract young people from all over the world. If you want an unforgettable and unique party holiday, come to Golden Sands. The beach promenade is lined with shops, boutiques, and retailers. You can buy the latest fashions and food here as well as traditional holiday souvenirs. You’re in the right region of Bulgaria if you’re looking for clothes and jewellery as well as other things. If you can’t find anything in the shops here, it’s worth visiting Varna. Here, there are just as many possibilities to blow your holiday money in the shops. Active holidaymakers also like to come to this region of Bulgaria. The area around the beach is wonderfully green with patches of forest. Ramblers and nature lovers get their money’s worth in Slatni Pjasazi, the Bulgarian name for Golden Sands.
Sunny Beach – welcome to the country’s biggest holiday resort
Sunny Beach attracts even more tourists than Golden Sands. It is the most popular and biggest resort in the country. The beach is 8 kilometres long. In many places, it is 150 metres wide. Slanchev Bryag, as it’s known in Bulgarian, is on the Black Sea coast in Nessebar Bay. It is 38 kilometres away from Burgas. You can go on a day trip to the region’s capital from Sunny Beach. If you stay in Bulgaria’s biggest seaside resort, you have lots of things to look forward to on your break. Sunny Beach is the perfect place for a family holiday, a break with lots of different sports activities, or a holiday in a famous party town. During the day, you can lie in the sun on the long beach. If you want to try some water sports, you can find everything that you could possibly want here, from water skiing and jet skiing to diving and even beach volleyball. The beach is suitable for families with children because the sea isn’t rough. The water quality is amazing and there are no nasty surprises under the water. The temperature’s not too hot. The mountains and the sea create a fresh breeze. Because of the size of the beach, all sorts of holiday goers come here in the summer months.
After a day at the beach, the party starts. Bars, discos, and clubs lure you inside. You can dance the night away in lots of different places. To get the day off to a relaxed start, you can go to the south of the resort. There you’ll find wonderful, natural sand dunes. Take a walk until you get to the sea. If you want to enjoy nature, Sunny Beach is charming with its surrounding green hills. On the whole, the resort has been developed for tourists.
Those who are interested in culture are drawn from the resort to Nessebar. The historical city is another highlight to add to your holiday in Bulgaria. The town’s Medieval buildings and architecture mean that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ruins of the fortifications and many old churches, windmills, and typical Bulgarian wood houses decorate the townscape. Museums and surviving churches are worth a visit. You can learn all about the history of the country.
As I’ve already said, the town of Burgas isn’t too far away from Sunny Beach. If you’re interested in culture and history, you should visit the town. Here, there are lots of museums as well as a historic town centre. You should take a look at the Natural History Museum and the Ethnographic Museum, for example. There are also lots of other day trip destinations. The Nature Park in Varna is nearby. Both the young and the old have fun in the Aqua Park. St Vlas is home to an impressive yacht harbour. You can’t be bored on holiday in Sunny Beach.
