An authentic Italian holiday is something everyone should experience at least once. This utter relaxation out in the soft green hills of Umbria will give you a rejuvenating feeling. Especially if you can stay in a wonderful historical place like San Gemini and spend seven night half board in pretty a medieval mansion. I found a fantastic offer on Travelbird.co.uk which I combined for you with flights that you can book on Budgetair.ie!

You will fly from Dublin to Rome and can decide to either reach the hotel by train or by renting a car. Both takes roughly one and a half hours but I’d suggest you to rent a car because this gives you liberty of exploring the surrounding area in Umbria, also known as “The Green Heart of Italy”,  for the whole week. It only costs you €13 per person, per day if you share the costs with your partner. I chose October for your stay. Since this is high season for harvesting, you will be able to make wonderful wine tours to neighbouring vineyards and taste the delicious wine from the area… and maybe bring home some bottles of Sagrantino or Sangiovese :)

As for your accommodation: You will stay in L’Albergo Duomo (67% on Tripadvisor) and be welcomed with a nice drink! Located in the medieval town of San Gemini, it served as a country house for an aristocratic family in the 13th century. The glamour and luxury is still lingering and you got stunning views across the valleys from up there. The offer works for the comfortable Superior Room, which also has a small roof terrace from where you can see San Gemini. If you like some splurge, then you can also upgrade to the Spa Suite that features an elegant hot tub in the middle of the room, as well as a Turkish bath and marble showers. Something for newly-weds maybe… the half board option will cater you with breakfast (mostly sweet) and a 3-course dinner excluding drinks. So a nice arrangement to spend the day exploring the area!

Perugia, for example is a great place for a day trip. The Gothic Cathedral of San Lorenzo is definitely worth a visit and you can relax in the charming little cafes and restaurants on the lovely piazzas. On the Piazza IV Novembre you will find a beautiful 13th century fountain, which is one of the iconic building in the city. Oh but don’t forget to leave enough time to take part in the two 2-hour cooking classes to return to Ireland with some authentic Italian recipes!
