Celebrate Irish Seafood

Your Guide on the Best Irish Seafood Around

As an island nation, we Irish know a thing or two about some quality seafood. One thing I always notice when I travel somewhere landlocked is the quality of the seafood. Where better to sample some of the worlds best than our very own home. Benefiting from the fruits of the sea is nothing new to us. Going back hundreds of years our culinary traditions are rooted in reaping the harvest of the sea.

In this article, I’ll take you through some of the amazing events that celebrate this mouthwatering tradition. You’ll be able to shuck your own oysters or pair your favorite fish with a fabulous wine. This article is part of my Taste the Island Theme Month, so that means there’s plenty more where this article comes from! I’ll be taking you on a culinary adventure around this beautiful island we call home and presenting you with some of the best options when it comes to seafood. Galway International Oyster Festival

Why not kick off this guide with one of the most famous celebrations of oysters in the world! Running from the 27th of September to the 29th of September, the Galway International Oyster Festival happens to be one of the oldest of its kind. Included in this festival is the world oyster opening championships which are always intriguing. Competitors come from all around the world to be in with a chance of being crowned the champion.

Of course, there is plenty more going on than just tasting the oysters. Over the last couple of years, Galway has developed into a foodies paradise and the oysters are just the tip of the iceberg! There’s even a food trail you can follow where you can take in the most amount of restaurants possible. This festival has something for everyone so even if you’re not the biggest fan of oysters I can guarantee you’ll find something. If you’re looking for a way to sample some of the best seafood in Ireland you wouldn’t be going too far wrong with this feast for the senses.

Foxford Mussel Festival

Next up is something a little less well known but definitely well worth checking out. This inaugural festival runs from 26th – 28th of October. Its purpose is not only to sample some delicious mussels but also to allow people to experience the music, art, and culture of this charming Mayo town. If you haven’t been before, Foxford is located in the north of the county Mayo. It enjoys some of the most stunning scenery in the county.

Many of the mussels provided for the festival come from Killary Fjord Shellfish. Throughout the weekend they’ll be supplying some of the world-famous blue shell mussels. From moules mariniere to seafood chowder Chef Kathleen will showcase the best ways to cook these sumptuous treats. The whole weekend will feature a number of great events such as cooking demos, foraging suggestions and plenty of live music.

Guinness Storehouse Seafest

Probably one of the most unlikely and famous pairings of food in the world is Guinness and Oysters. So it only makes sense that the home of the black stuff would be playing host to a number of events from the 1st of Sept to the 30th of November. This seafest has started already and will run right to the end of the festival.

Not only will you be able to enjoy monthly seafest supper clubs but you’ll also have curated menus, storehouse events including specially made Guinness tinged seafood and oyster shucking showcases. Each one of these events will be truly spectacular to behold offering you insights into pairings and seasonal Guinness brews that will be showcased at these events. If you’ve got a lover of a pint of plain then I can’t think of a better event for them!

Catch and Cook Renvyle

While some people like their dinner to be served up to them there are a few who would rather grab the fish themselves. At Renvyle House Hotel in Connemara, you can learn how to catch and cook your very own fish dinner. The historic country house hotel has pretty much got its own bit of water where for years the owners have reaped its watery benefits.

Right now you can book a stay and get a bunch of extras along with the catch and cook aspect of things. You’ll be getting the best teacher around too with the head chef in the hotel being a commissioner of Eurototeques. This little treat is the best way to get some relaxation in with your sampling of some fishy delights
