The civil war in Syria has been going on for over 4 years now, which forced an estimated 9 million people to leave their homes. Families are torn apart, friendships lost and lives destroyed. Many Syrians had no other choice but to escape into the neighbouring countries like Turkey and Jordan, or even to make their way to Europe.

UNICEF & Syrian Refugee Camp Zaatari

The Jordan refugee camp Zaatari, only 10k South of the Syrian boarder, hosts 83,000 refugees and it keeps on growing. UNICEF‘s Refugee Agency, UNHCR, has managed to establish town-like structures and connected it to the road network, in order to optimize the delivery of goods. However, Zaatari also has to deal with major isssues: Increasing crime, prostitution and a drug-dealing problem make the lives of the people extra hard. Especially for women and children the camp becomes more and more dangerous.

Knowing about the situation of the refugees, I gladly accepted an opportunity to support a charity gala event organized by Zeina Sabra. She contacted me and asked, if Holidayguru was in any way able to help supporting the fundraising ball in Cork, which collects money for UNICEF, to support the women and children in Zaatari. I have to thank Zeina at this point for contacting me, as this is a great opportunity to do my part!

The charity event takes place at the Kingsley Hotel in Cork City and is also supported my Redfm, the Clarion Hotel and many other companies. Special guests are Joe Geoghegan, the honorary consul of Jordan, who will issue the Irish Jordanian relations and the problems that occurred through the conflict. Another speaker is Prof. Louise Kenny, a consultant obstetrician, who will point out the problems about pregnancy in the camp and the risks of it. You can read more about the event on their Facebook page.

The funraising gala ball is a black tie event and if you like to support it, you can purchase tickets for €75, which includes a 3-course gourmet dinner and a glass of Prosecco. Singer Amanda Neri will spoil you with her lovely voice and you can win prizes worth more than €1000. You can also win a European city break, which Holidayguru will provide. I wish Zeina the best of luck with her event and hope for the best possible turnout to support the refugee Camp Zaatari.
